Flute students in their second year of study or early in Grade 2 level work who are ready to explore ensemble playing. This duet works well for students developing confidence in reading and executing their own part while listening to a peer.

• Establish secure unison passages first before separating into independent lines; this builds confidence in both players before tackling the harmonic interplay.
• Encourage the student with the primary melody to shape phrases with natural breathing and dynamic contour, giving the second flute something musical to follow.
• Work through rhythm sections separately, then combine them slowly to ensure clean entrances and exits at key moments.
• Balance tone quality between the two flutes by having players listen actively to each other; duet playing is an excellent ear-training context.

Use this as a performance piece for a flute studio recital, a winter or spring concert spotlight, or a chamber music showcase. It works equally well as a rehearsal duet that builds musicianship without overwhelming either player.
