Why we love this

Shaw writes novelty pieces with real musical substance. The humor never overshadows solid voice leading and singable, engaging melodies, which means your singers stay challenged while the audience stays entertained. This track record of balancing fun with craftsmanship makes his catalogue a reliable choice when you want something that lands with personality without sacrificing artistry.

What to expect

A tongue-in-cheek country number that revels in its own theatricality. The piece has warmth and humor without irony, inviting singers and audiences alike into a moment of pure entertainment.

Who it's for

Choirs looking to program something with personality and contemporary flair. The TBB voicing works well for male-dominated or mixed ensembles seeking accessible contemporary material that still engages singers intellectually.

How to get the most out of it

  • Commit to the comedic premise fully. Underplaying the novelty angle flattens the piece; your singers need permission to embrace the country idiom and lean into character.
  • Lock the rhythm section early in rehearsal. The groove drives the energy, so get your bass line locked solid before layering in upper voices.
  • Balance the vocal parts so the melody cuts through without the supporting voices disappearing. Novelty pieces live or die based on clarity and presence.

How to use it

Pair this with other contemporary or novelty material in a pop/variety concert, or use it as a palate cleanser between heavier repertoire. The 10-page length makes it manageable for programs already heavy with longer works, and the country aesthetic plays well alongside gospel or Americana selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Stylistic flexibility within country idiom conventions
  • Rhythmic precision in groove-based music
  • Ensemble balance and blend in contemporary voicings
  • Text delivery and character interpretation
  • Reading mixed voicing across TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB configurations
