About the Composer: Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi has shaped instrumental music education for over twenty-five years as a teacher, conductor, and composer. His catalog exceeds 100 published works, many of which have earned spots on international festival and competition programs across North America, Europe, and Japan. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario, studied composition and arranging at the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, and completed a Ph.D. at York University in Toronto.

Gassi is known for bringing creative energy to the classroom through both his compositions and his professional development work. His seminars on engaging students in the creative process and his workshops on digital workflows for music directors reflect his commitment to helping educators innovate. He appears regularly as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician throughout the United States and Canada, and his pieces are frequent selections at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.

Why we love this

Gassi understands what keeps young percussionists engaged: rhythmic clarity, accessible technique, and genuine fun. The focus on flams as the central musical idea gives students a unified technical objective while the piece itself proves that fundamental rudiments can drive interesting ensemble music, not just exercise books.

What to expect

Energetic and playful, with the relentless alternation of flams creating momentum and rhythmic vitality. The piece has the feel of controlled excitement, where technical precision drives the musical effect rather than existing separately from it.

Who it's for

Percussion ensembles at the intermediate level who are ready to move beyond basic stroke work into ensemble coordination. This piece suits groups preparing for festivals, concerts, or students exploring how a single technical concept can anchor an entire arrangement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Isolate flam clarity before tempo. Have students practice the grace note-to-primary stroke ratio as a group so the flams read as intentional attacks rather than sloppy articulation.
  • Balance the alternating hands naturally without over-thinking the mechanics. Once the motion is ingrained, the musical phrase should flow.
  • Use the score to identify which players carry the melody at any given moment. Percussion ensembles often benefit from explicit discussion of voice leading that might otherwise feel secondary.

How to use it

Program this early in a concert to establish energy and showcase your group's technical facility with a crowd-pleasing vehicle. It also works well as a teaching piece within a festival or workshop context where the ensemble can build ensemble cohesion through a shared rhythmic objective.

Skills your students will build

  • Flam technique (grace note placement and dynamics relative to primary stroke)
  • Hand alternation and consistency between dominant and non-dominant hands
  • Ensemble rhythmic synchronization and listening
  • Musical phrasing within a percussion texture
