About the Composer: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings deep expertise across performance, composition, and music pedagogy. A trumpet performer who studied with renowned teachers and played professionally with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, Bullock has drawn on real ensemble experience to shape his compositional voice. He holds degrees in Music Education through the doctoral level and spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in schools, including seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he later chaired the Music Education Department.

With more than 600 published works spanning concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band, Bullock has established himself as a prolific arranger and composer. He co-authored the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributed arrangements to Music Expressions, Alfred's school music curriculum. His work has earned recognition including ASCAP membership since 1980 and listings in Marquis Who's Who publications. Bullock has conducted clinics and workshops across the United States, Canada, and England.

Why we love this

Five to Go strikes the balance most directors need at Grade 3: substantial enough to engage serious student musicians, yet forgiving enough that sections can shine even when preparation time is limited. Bullock's section feature structure gives every part ownership of the musical narrative, which builds confidence and keeps rehearsals energized. The writing sits perfectly in players' hands and reads cleanly, qualities that earn trust from experienced educators who know good craft when they see it.

What to expect

Clean, energetic, and purposeful. Five to Go moves with forward momentum and honest orchestration that lets each section breathe without fussiness. The piece feels like real band music rather than pedagogical exercise, giving students the satisfaction of playing something that sounds both accomplished and genuinely musical.

Who it's for

Concert bands at Grade 3 level, particularly those ready to move beyond unison writing into more sophisticated sectional independence. Directors seeking a piece that rewards solid fundamentals without demanding advanced technical skills will find this well-calibrated. It works equally well for groups building confidence in their reading abilities and those polishing ensemble balance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Spotlight each section feature clearly in rehearsal; assign a measure number where that section's melody begins, and have them mark it in their parts so they know exactly when they own the sound.
  • Balance the accompaniment voices so they support rather than compete with the featured section; this is where the full band sound shines without overwhelming anyone.
  • Let the natural phrasing emerge from phrase length rather than forcing uniform articulation across all parts; Grade 3 players respond well when they understand the shape of their musical idea.
  • Use the conductor score's layout to track all five section features simultaneously; this prepares you to hear problems in the blend that individual part study won't reveal.

How to use it

Place this on a winter or spring concert where you want a centerpiece that demonstrates sectional strength and clean ensemble work. It pairs well with lighter openers or closing finales, and its moderate length (implied by the score's 244 pages of full conductor materials) fits comfortably into diverse programming. Consider programming it when you have featured soloists in other pieces; this gives the supporting sections their own moment in the spotlight.

Skills your students will build

  • Sectional independence and awareness of when their voice is featured versus accompanying
  • Reading parts with clear melodic responsibility rather than doubling or unison texture
  • Balancing accompaniment figures to support featured lines
  • Sustaining phrase shape across section changes
  • Listening for blend within their own section while supporting the full ensemble sound
