About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 works for singers of all ages. His output spans secular and sacred choral music, children's musicals, and foundational vocal resources including Sing at First Sight and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. His compositions are performed by choirs worldwide, and he remains active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician across the United States and internationally.

Beyond his publishing work, Beck is an accomplished tenor who performs with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and directs musical theatre. He has served as a commissioned composer and guest conductor for honor choirs and all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast. A graduate of Ithaca College (Bachelor's in Music Education) and Northwest Missouri State University (Master's in Music Education), Beck has been an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992.

Why we love this

Beck's writing shines in the specificity of his vocal writing. The accented melodic theme creates a vivid musical image while remaining entirely achievable for developing singers. This piece works equally well in concert settings and competition because it satisfies both educational rigor and audience engagement without compromising either one.

What to expect

Warm, wonder-struck, and luminous. The accented theme mimics the gentle pulse of fireflies emerging on a dark summer evening, creating an intimate nocturnal mood. The piece captures that specific magic of childhood observation transformed into thoughtful musical storytelling.

Who it's for

This octavo suits middle school and high school choirs seeking accessible yet musically sophisticated 2-part literature. Young singers benefit from carefully chosen ranges and intervals that build confidence while avoiding artificial constraints. It appeals equally to directors preparing festival entries and those building concert programs around nature themes or seasonal material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the accented vocal line to suggest the flicker and flutter of fireflies rather than pounding it rhythmically. Let articulation dance.
  • Balance the two parts so neither voice dominates. The interplay between parts carries the musical narrative.
  • Attend to the accompaniment as a full partner. The piano writing is intentional and shapes the mood of the summer night.
  • Find the youthful curiosity in the lyrics and let that emotional authenticity guide your phrasing and dynamics.

How to use it

Program this alongside other nature-inspired works in a themed concert, or use it as a lighter programming choice that refreshes the ear between heavier selections. Its craftsmanship and appeal to adjudicators make it a solid choice for festival competition while remaining engaging enough for formal concert performances.
