More about this title

About the Composer: Emily Crocker

Emily Crocker

Emily Crocker spent 15 years teaching music in Texas public schools before joining Hal Leonard in 1989, where she shaped choral publishing as VP of Choral Publications until her 2017 retirement. During those three decades at the publisher, she became instrumental in creating educational choral materials now used across the country.

Her work extends beyond publishing. Crocker founded and directed the Milwaukee Children's Choir from 1994 to 2009, then established the Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee, which she led until 2015. Her compositions have earned performances worldwide. Based in Fort Worth, Texas, she continues composing and supporting the arts community.

Why we love this

Crocker writes with the rhythmic precision and harmonic clarity that come from decades spent understanding what students can actually execute. Fire and Ice carries that signature directness; it gives singers a genuine emotional arc without requiring advanced vocal gymnastics, making it equally rewarding for regional honor choirs and regular concert seasons.

What to expect

The piece embodies its title; extremes of temperature and emotion create dynamic tension throughout. Expect a journey that moves between contrasting moods with harmonic sophistication that keeps singers engaged without overwhelming them.

Who it's for

SSA and SSAA choirs at the high school level and beyond who want a piece with genuine musical substance and clear programming appeal. This works equally well for festival competitions, concert showcases, or honor choir readings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the text painting between the "fire" and "ice" sections by adjusting dynamic shapes rather than just singing louder or softer. Let the harmonic movement guide your singers' sense of contrast.
  • Establish crisp articulation on consonants during the faster sections; this clarity prevents the piece from losing momentum and helps SSA voices cut through with definition.
  • Shape phrases in longer arcs rather than stopping at every punctuation mark. Crocker's writing often benefits from breathing smartly between musical ideas rather than between every poetic phrase.

How to use it

Position this as a concert centerpiece when you want something that appeals to audiences beyond the traditional choral repertoire. Its thematic clarity and emotional directness make it an excellent choice for festival programs where you're mixing classical and contemporary works.

Skills your students will build

  • Contrasting dynamics and mood shifts within a single piece
  • Part independence in three-voice harmony
  • Text expression through harmonic movement
  • Sustained legit tone in slower sections while maintaining clarity in articulated passages
