The skillful concert band transcriptions of the late Glenn Cliffe Bainum have proven to be a standard by which others are measured. This transcription is one of Mr. Bainum's most monumental works. Vasily Kalinnikov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky, died prematurely at 35 just as he was establishing himself as one of the great Russian composers. About the Composer: Vasily Kalinnikov

Vasily Kalinnikov (1866–1901) occupied a unique place in Russian musical history. A contemporary of Tchaikovsky who emerged just as the nationalist movement was reshaping Russian composition, Kalinnikov developed a lyrical voice rooted in folk melody and orchestral color. His tragically short life (he died of tuberculosis at 35) meant his catalog remained small, yet his four symphonies secured his reputation as a composer of substantial craft and genuine melodic gift.

For American concert bands, Kalinnikov's legacy rests largely on Glenn Cliffe Bainum's transcriptions. Bainum's arrangements revealed that Kalinnikov's orchestral thinking translated beautifully to wind ensemble, preserving both the emotional depth and the structural integrity of the originals. This Finale remains one of the most performed Russian symphonic movements in the band repertoire.
