Description
Fiesta!, by Jorge Vargas, captures the spirit of a joyful celebration in Mexico, perhaps in a small town or even a large city. The Latin rhythms evoke the excitement that people feel as they are surrounded by laughter, joy, food, and music. Fiesta! contains many Mexican folk rhythms that are common in mariachi music, which makes this a perfect piece to introduce your students to the music of Mexico. (2:05)

Don't just read it, hear it, play along with it, and watch your students grow with it. In MakeMusic Cloud, Fiesta!: Bassoon comes alive with professional accompaniment, adjustable tempo, and built-in practice tools that turn solo practice into real progress.

About the Composer: Jorge L. Vargas

Jorge L. Vargas

Jorge L. Vargas grew up in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from The University of Texas-San Antonio and his Master's in Education from Lamar University. He has taught at Memorial Junior High in Eagle Pass, TX, where he directed the concert band and mariachi group while coordinating beginner classes.

Vargas composes and arranges for concert band, marching band, string orchestra, and mariachi ensemble. His works have appeared on multiple state and festival lists, earned selection to the J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice list and Bandworld Magazine's Top 100, and been featured at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. He lives in Eagle Pass with his wife Adriana, a 5th-grade math teacher.

Why we love this

Vargas writes with genuine authority about Mexican musical tradition. He doesn't treat mariachi rhythms as exotic window dressing; instead, he integrates them authentically into concert band scoring, giving your students real access to music that matters culturally while staying musically manageable at Grade 2.5. The result plays equally well at festival, in assembly, or on a multicultural celebration concert.

What to expect

Fiesta! radiates warmth and celebration from the opening moments. You hear the colors of a Mexican town square: bright brass cutting through syncopated percussion, folk melodies dancing over steady rhythmic pulses, everyone invited to the party. The piece never stops smiling.

Who it's for

Concert bands at Grade 2.5 who want to expand their cultural repertoire beyond standard arrangements. Directors seeking an accessible yet authentic introduction to Mexican music will find students respond immediately to the infectious rhythms and clear melodic content.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the Latin rhythms in your percussion section before rehearsing the full band. The clave and rhythmic foundation make or break the energy, so isolate drums and bass line until the pulse is rock solid.
  • Balance the melodic voices against the accompaniment patterns. Vargas layers folk melodies over driving rhythmic accompaniment, so avoid letting the rhythm section overpower the tune.
  • Shape phrase endings with slight pulls back in tempo to let the joy breathe. Fiesta music feels spontaneous and celebratory, not metronomic.

How to use it

Program this alongside world music selections or as the anchor of a Latin American music festival. It also works beautifully as a springboard for conversations about mariachi tradition and could pair well with a cultural presentation or student research project on Mexican music. The 2:05 runtime makes it ideal for concert variety without eating significant rehearsal time.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing Latin rhythms and clave patterns characteristic of mariachi music
  • Balancing melody against syncopated accompaniment
  • Articulating quick-moving passages in a rhythmically secure ensemble
  • Understanding and performing folk melody in a contemporary concert band context
