About the Composer: Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest has established himself as a prolific composer whose works for young band enjoy regular performances across the United States and internationally. His career spans more than three decades in the classroom, where he taught instrumental music at F.E. Peacock Middle School in Illinois while simultaneously building a significant catalog of compositions and arrangements. His score Cloud Gate received a landmark performance at Chicago's Millennium Park in 2017 before an audience exceeding 5,000 people, and that same year he earned the Illinois Grade School Music Association's Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education.

Loest's music has reached audiences far beyond the concert hall, appearing on network television programs including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Good Morning America. His pedagogical contributions run equally deep; he has collaborated on several widely adopted instrumental methods, among them Measures of Success, Warm-ups and Beyond, and Rhythms and Beyond. In 2022, he founded Fanfare Music Press to publish high-quality concert band compositions and arrangements. A member of ASCAP and graduate of Illinois State University and Northwestern University, Loest continues to accept commissions and compose regularly from his home in Illinois.

Why we love this

Fearless Dreams delivers exactly what a Grade 3 concert band needs in a program-opening or closing moment: musical substance paired with genuine accessibility. Loest's gift for memorable melodic writing shines here, with a theme that builds naturally and carries enough harmonic interest to engage both players and listeners without demanding virtuosity. The key changes and textural shifts provide satisfying teachable moments around form and orchestration while keeping the ensemble motivated throughout a confident, focused two minutes.

What to expect

The music radiates determination and uplifting optimism from its opening gesture. As the unforgettable central melody develops and the work moves through different harmonic colors and textures, you sense an emotional journey unfolding, each moment building toward something grand and affirmative. The final section arrives with genuine triumph, leaving both ensemble and audience energized.

Who it's for

This work suits Grade 3 concert bands across all performance environments, whether they are developing ensembles taking on their first multi-section pieces or established groups seeking reliable concert repertoire. Directors building programs around themes of courage, aspiration, or achievement will find Fearless Dreams both musically appropriate and emotionally resonant for student musicians.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the main melody's growth across the first section by gradually increasing ensemble balance and projection; avoid rushing the broadening process, which is the emotional heart of the work.
  • Use the key changes as opportunities to reset ensemble focus and intonation. Transition cleanly between centers, emphasizing the fresh character each new key brings rather than simply pushing forward.
  • Balance the various textural layers so that supporting voices remain transparent enough to let the primary melody sing through, even when fuller scoring adds depth.
  • Manage the pacing of the climactic closer so the final moments feel earned and weighty rather than hurried; a slight breath before the final cadence will strengthen its impact.

How to use it

Open your concert with this piece to establish immediate momentum and emotional connection with your audience. Alternatively, position it as a climactic closer that sends listeners out feeling inspired and assured. At just over two minutes, it pairs efficiently with other works in a balanced program and works equally well as a contest or festival selection.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing across multiple key centers within a single piece
  • Balancing melody against accompaniment in varied textural settings
  • Shaping a long melodic phrase that develops and grows over several phrases
  • Ensemble blend and intonation during harmonic transitions
  • Responding to expressive pacing and dynamic architecture that supports emotional arc
