Description
CHARLES GOUNOD (1818-1893) was a prolific French composer in the mid 1800' s, but he was not well recognized by his peers or the public until his opera Faust was first performed in Paris in 1859. The opera remains today as one of the most dramatic and popular in the repertoire. The libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on the two-part play by Goethe, tells the story of the aging philosopher in search of lost youth. Selling his soul to the devil, he is transformed into a young man, but when he falls in love with the virtuous Marguerite, her own soul hangs in the balance. In Act 3, having sent the devil on an errand to find a gift for her, Faust sings "Salut demeure chaste e pure" in praise of her unrivalled purity. More about this title

About the Composer: Charles Gounod

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a French composer whose early career earned him respect in academic circles, but whose true legacy rests on his operas. Faust, premiered in Paris in 1859, transformed his standing overnight and remains one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. His gift for lyrical melody and dramatic orchestration established him as a master of French operatic tradition, influencing generations of composers who followed.

Why we love this

This cavatina sits at the emotional heart of Faust and offers tenor soloists a role that balances lyrical beauty with dramatic weight. The orchestration is transparent enough to support a singer without overwhelming the vocal line, making it ideal for singers who have developed solid technique but may not yet command the full dramatic presence required by heavier tenor roles. Programming this excerpt introduces audiences to one of opera's most beloved melodies while remaining manageable for excellent regional opera companies and university opera programs.

What to expect

The cavatina opens with quiet reverence, the tenor addressing Marguerite's dwelling as a sanctuary. The melody unfolds with tenderness and admiration, accompanied by delicate orchestration that creates an intimate atmosphere despite the full orchestral setting. As the piece builds, devotion gives way to passion, culminating in a soaring affirmation that captures both the sweetness of young love and the desperation of a man willing to abandon his soul for it.

Who it's for

Tenor soloists with strong legit technique who are ready to tackle a standard operatic repertoire piece, and opera companies, university opera programs, or concert series looking to feature vocal soloists in an accessible yet dramatically compelling operatic excerpt. This score serves conductors who want to present the work with full orchestra or who need both conductor score and parts for rehearsal and performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the tenor line with the orchestral accompaniment by establishing clear communication between conductor and soloist; the orchestra should frame rather than dominate the vocal phrase.
  • Shape the legit melody with long, sustained phrasing that respects the poem's devotional character; resist the urge to break the line into smaller units.
  • Control vibrato in the opening phrases to allow the text clarity and emotional intimacy to register before expanding the voice in the climactic moments.
  • Work closely with the first violins to ensure their supporting lines complement rather than compete with the tenor's line, particularly in the middle section of the cavatina.

How to use it

Feature this cavatina as a standalone operatic encore or as part of a concert celebrating French Romantic opera. It pairs naturally with other arias from Faust or other Gounod works, and its moderate length makes it ideal for mixed concert programs where you want to include opera without requiring a full theatrical production. The piece also works well as a showcase for tenor soloists in competition or festival settings.
