About the Composer: Todd Stalter

Todd Stalter

Todd Stalter spent 34 years building one of Illinois's most respected band programs at Eureka High School, where his ensembles earned state championships, superior ratings, and invitations to perform at Orchestra Hall and Walt Disney World. Beyond the podium, he has adjudicated contests across multiple states, led honor bands in Georgia and Delaware, and presented clinics on composition and music education at regional and state conferences.

Stalter holds degrees in music education and trumpet performance from Illinois State University, where he studied conducting with Dr. Stephen K. Steele and trumpet with soloists and faculty of the highest caliber. His compositions for band and string orchestra are performed nationally and appear in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series published by GIA. He was inducted into the Illinois State Marching Band Championships Hall of Fame.

Why we love this

Stalter understands what Grade 1 bands can actually play and enjoy. The narrative structure keeps student musicians engaged throughout a concert piece that doesn't feel simplistic, and the interactive ending (you decide how it concludes) transforms a performance from recitation into storytelling. This is the kind of piece that makes audiences lean in.

What to expect

A cinematic journey in miniature. Mystery unfolds into danger, then softens into an elegant waltz before building toward a climactic challenge. The brevity concentrates the emotional arc, making every section feel significant.

Who it's for

Grade 1 bands ready to tackle a concert piece with real musical substance and programmatic interest. This works equally well for festival entries, concert programming, or rehearsals where engagement and storytelling matter as much as technical development.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the mystery and danger sections with dynamic contrast. Even at this grade level, clear articulation and phrase direction will heighten the dramatic effect.
  • Let the ballroom waltz breathe with a gentle, dancing quality. Encourage the ensemble to feel the three-beat pulse naturally rather than metronomically.
  • Build excitement into the final challenge. A controlled accelerando in the approach to the ending will prepare both your band and the audience for the decision moment.
  • Plan your chosen ending in advance and rehearse it until it feels inevitable. The power of this piece lies in a confident performance of the conclusion, not suspense about what comes next.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece on a concert that lets Grade 1 musicians shine without excessive difficulty. The narrative quality makes it ideal for thematic concerts or young musician showcase events where audiences include families new to band music.

Skills your students will build

  • Narrative interpretation and musical characterization
  • Phrasing and dynamic shaping across contrasting sections
  • Ensemble balance in waltz texture
  • Coordination of articulation and rhythm in faster passages
  • Confidence performing in multiple musical styles within one piece
