Description
Scored for trumpet soloist Wynton Marsalis, Donald Hunsberger's band accompaniment arrangement of Fantasie Brillante No. 3 in Jean-Baptiste Arban's collection of Fantasias and Variations possesses a breadth of musical styles that demand strict formal analysis in addition to interpretative and technical requirements. The opening section features a flowing melodic passage followed by a technical passage with a return to the style of the opening melody. The theme is then stated which leads into three variations that employ variants in triplet groupings, quadruple 16th-note groupings, and finally, the ever-present triple tonguing, once again a primary technical resource utilized in this and others of the Fantasias.

Fantasie Brillante is one of eleven solos in the Marsalis/Hunsberger Carnaval project. The recital version of all eleven trumpet solos with piano accompaniment is available in one book for soloist use in preparation or for recital performance (00-35429).

Hunsberger's band accompaniments for all eleven solos are available from Alfred either for sale or as rental works.Recordings of all eleven tunes performed by Wynton Marsalis with band accompaniment (performed by the Eastman Wind Ensemble, conducted by Donald Hunsberger) remain available from Sony BMG Music Entertainment, on iTunes and a variety of other retail sources. A truly remarkable sparkling collection to feature your trumpet soloist.

More about this title

About the Composer: Jean Baptiste Arban

Jean Baptiste Arban (1825-1889) was a French cornet virtuoso and pedagogue whose technical innovations and prolific output shaped brass playing for generations. His collection of fantasias and variations established the standard for virtuosic solo literature on the cornet and trumpet, combining lyrical melody with brilliant passagework that remains unmatched in its musical demands and rewards.

Arban's influence extends far beyond the 19th century. His exercises and etudes form the foundation of trumpet pedagogy worldwide, while his concert works continue to challenge and inspire advanced players. The Fantasies and Variations showcase his deep understanding of the instrument's capabilities, blending operatic sensibility with technical ingenuity.

Why we love this

Hunsberger's arrangement captures the brilliance of Arban's original while giving your trumpet soloist an ensemble that truly supports the virtuosity on display. The band writing is transparent and elegant, never overwhelming the solo line, and the Grade 3 level makes this accessible to strong high school or emerging college trumpeters who are ready for genuine concert literature.

What to expect

Fantasie Brillante sparkles with the elegance and showmanship of 19th-century salon music, yet its technical demands command genuine respect. The piece swings between lyrical storytelling and virtuosic display, creating moments of intimate beauty alongside passages that dazzle with rhythmic complexity and dexterity.

Who it's for

This score serves conductors programming a featured trumpet soloist with solid technical facility and musical maturity. It works equally well in a concert setting showcasing your principal trumpet or as a centerpiece for a solo competition or festival appearance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the opening flowing melody against the band's harmonic foundation; the soloist should sing through sustained phrases without rushing, allowing the accompaniment to breathe underneath.
  • Approach the technical passages with clarity and precision rather than pure speed. Hunsberger's orchestration gives the trumpet room to articulate cleanly, especially in the quadruple 16th-note variations.
  • Mark the triple tonguing passages clearly in rehearsal and verify the soloist has secure articulation at performance tempo before adding ensemble context.
  • Listen for the band's response to cadential moments and fermatas; small ensemble gestures with the conductor will ensure the soloist and band stay locked during transitions between sections.

How to use it

Feature this work on a concert celebrating brass artistry or pair it with other Arban fantasias from the Marsalis/Hunsberger Carnaval project if your soloist is preparing multiple selections. The piece stands confidently on its own as a complete concert moment, requiring no supporting repertoire beyond thoughtful programming choices that complement its character.

Skills your students will build

  • Triple tonguing articulation and clarity across multiple tempos
  • Lyrical phrasing in ornamental passages with baroque sensibility
  • Technical facility in rapid 16th-note and triplet groupings
  • Ensemble listening and balance as a soloist within band context
  • Formal analysis of theme and variations structure
