About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has built a career as a composer and conductor who moves fluidly across orchestral, band, and chamber music worlds. His works have reached audiences at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House, and countless schools worldwide, earning him the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and a place among elected members of the American Bandmasters Association.

Beyond the concert hall, Balmages has been commissioned for significant institutional moments, including music for the University of Miami's presidential inauguration and performances at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service. He maintains an active guest conducting schedule with all-state ensembles, university groups, and professional orchestras across the globe. Currently, he serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.

Why we love this

Balmages designs this fanfare to deliver immediate impact without sacrificing musical substance. The combination of rhythmic drive and lyrical depth gives your band something genuinely exciting to perform, not just a flashy opener that leaves nothing to say afterward.

What to expect

A surge of controlled energy. The piece captures the anticipation of something major about to unfold, with bold gestures and sweeping melodic lines that feel both contemporary and accessible. There's drama here, but it's earned rather than forced.

Who it's for

Grade 4 concert bands ready for an energetic concert opener that commands attention. This works equally well for bands competing at festivals or performing in community settings where you want the audience engaged from measure one.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the bold rhythmic motives across the ensemble so they cut through without burying the harmonic foundation underneath.
  • Let the lyrical lines breathe fully; they'll land harder if the powerful sections before them don't rush.
  • Shape the dramatic arc by gradually building dynamic intensity through the piece rather than starting at full volume.

How to use it

Open your concert with this. The excitement it generates sets a powerful tone for everything that follows, and it's substantial enough that audiences recognize it as a serious musical statement, not a throwaway curtain raiser.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing rhythmic precision within a contemporary idiom
  • Balancing rhythmic accompaniment figures with sustained lyrical passages
  • Shaping dynamic arcs across longer musical phrases
  • Maintaining ensemble cohesion during rapid sectional transitions
