About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has established himself as a composer and conductor working across orchestral, band, and chamber idioms with equal command. His works have reached audiences in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House, performed by ensembles ranging from professional orchestras to elementary school groups. He received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light. An elected member of the American Bandmasters Association, Balmages holds the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award and was commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for the inauguration of its sixth president. His music has been performed at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service and regularly features at conferences including the Midwest Clinic and College Band Directors Conference.

As a conductor, Balmages maintains active guest engagements with all-state, regional, university, and professional ensembles internationally. His positions have included appearances at Teatro dell'Aquila in Italy and numerous state and national music education conferences. Currently, he serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education.
