Why we love this
Balmages understands that a strong opening sets the tone for your entire concert, and Falcon Fanfare delivers exactly that. The piece stays within modest ranges and rhythmic demands while never sacrificing impact, so your students can execute it cleanly and confidently, leaving them energized rather than exhausted before the program truly begins.
What to expect
Falcon Fanfare opens with stacked, powerful chords that immediately command attention and establish presence. As harmonic layers multiply and rhythmic activity accelerates, the piece propels forward with mounting urgency, creating a sense of momentum and anticipation that energizes the audience and launches your program with flair.
Who it's for
Grade 2 concert bands seeking a festival or contest opener that balances dramatic impact with realistic student capabilities. This fanfare works equally well for young ensembles building confidence and for intermediate groups that benefit from a cleanly written, attention-grabbing curtain raiser.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the blocked chord writing in the opening section so harmonic layers remain audible as the piece thickens; avoid letting the full band wash out the inner voices.
- Shape the rhythmic acceleration toward the middle of the fanfare with clear articulation and steady pulse so the building energy feels intentional rather than rushed.
- Let the percussion anchor the harmonic complexity; their precision on rhythmic figures will help the winds lock into the forward motion.
How to use it
Program this as your concert opener when you want to seize attention immediately and establish an energetic tone. The modest demands on student stamina make it an ideal first selection, leaving your ensemble fresh for the substantive repertoire that follows.
Skills your students will build
- Balancing block chords and inner voicing
- Executing clean articulation during rhythmic acceleration
- Reading and performing harmonic progression
- Maintaining steady pulse while intensity increases
