About the Arranger: Brian Chung

Brian Chung

Brian Chung brings a multifaceted background to his work as a composer and arranger. After earning an undergraduate degree in business from the University of Michigan, he pursued advanced studies in piano and conducting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, followed by an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. For more than three decades, he served as Senior Vice President of Kawai America Corporation, where he remained deeply embedded in the music industry.

Chung's contributions to music education have earned him recognition from the Music Teachers National Association, including the 2004 MTNA Foundation Fellowship, the 2010 Distinguished Service Award, the 2019 Citation for Leadership, and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Association of Professional Music Teachers. He regularly appears as a conference speaker and continues to advocate for the music-making community through both his professional work and creative output.

Why we love this

Chung's harmonic language feels fresh without abandoning reverence for these beloved hymn melodies. Each arrangement respects the spiritual core of its source material while offering organists and pianists genuine musical discovery, and the included performance times make logistics effortless in a worship context where every minute matters.

What to expect

These arrangements honor tradition while embracing harmonic color and rhythmic vitality. The familiar hymn tunes emerge from contexts ranging from intricate to contemplative, inviting the listener into both comfort and surprise.

Who it's for

Advanced pianists serving in church settings or performing in recital contexts where sacred music holds a central place. This collection also appeals to pianists drawn to thoughtful harmonic writing and inventive voicings of familiar material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the harmonic innovations Chung introduces. These arrangements reward listeners who encounter the familiar melody within new sonorities; resist the temptation to over-pedal or blur the textural changes that define each setting.
  • Balance clarity of line with the richer textures Chung employs. Pay close attention to whether the melody sits in the soprano, inner voices, or bass, and voice your touch accordingly so the ear follows the intended journey.
  • Use the provided performance times to rehearse exact durations. This allows you to communicate precise timings to your worship team and plan transitions between arrangements or into spoken elements.

How to use it

Weave individual arrangements throughout a season of church services, selecting pieces that align with liturgical themes or seasons. A single arrangement can anchor a prelude, offertory, or postlude while offering your congregation a moment of musical renewal.

Skills your students will build

  • Rendering inventive harmonies with clarity and control
  • Navigating varied textures and registral shifts across the keyboard
  • Executing rhythmic settings that depart from traditional hymn meter
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment when the tune migrates between voices
