About the Arranger: Carol Matz

Carol Matz

Carol Matz brings three decades of piano pedagogy directly into her arrangements and compositions. With over 300 published works to her name, she has built a reputation for understanding exactly what students need to stay engaged while developing solid musicianship. Her teaching experience spans North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, where she has led workshops on piano instruction and repertoire selection.

Matz studied composition, arranging, and orchestration at the University of Miami and has worked across multiple musical contexts: orchestra, jazz big band, brass ensemble, and string writing. Her studio arrangement work in Miami's recording industry deepened her ear for contemporary sounds. She is perhaps best known for the Famous & Fun series, a collection of piano arrangements that demonstrates her gift for making modern and familiar music accessible to young pianists.

Why we love this

This arrangement captures the infectious energy of the original while keeping the technical demands reasonable for developing pianists. Big note format removes reading obstacles, letting students focus on locking in the groove and nailing the rhythmic drive that makes this piece fun.

What to expect

Upbeat and relentlessly positive, with a driving pop-rock pulse that propels the piece forward. The arrangement sparkles with character while staying within reach of younger hands.

Who it's for

Elementary and early intermediate pianists who respond well to contemporary, recognizable music. Students benefit from playing something their peers actually know, which boosts confidence and motivation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady tempo before playing; the syncopated rhythms are forgiving if the beat is rock-solid underneath
  • Emphasize the offbeat hits and accents to bring out the pop-rock character
  • Use the sustain pedal sparingly to keep the piece clean and punchy, especially during faster passages
  • Record yourself and listen back to check rhythmic accuracy in the hands separately before combining them

How to use it

Perfect for spring recitals, casual concerts, or community events where a contemporary crowd-pleaser lands well. It also works as a fun break during winter holiday programming, offering a modern alternative to traditional seasonal fare.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing and executing syncopated rhythmic patterns
  • Playing with steady pulse and groove orientation
  • Coordinating independent rhythmic ideas between both hands
  • Reading big note notation with confidence
  • Interpreting dynamic markings in a pop-rock context
