More about this title

About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and studied English and French at the University of Nevada before redirecting toward music education. She earned a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where her studies centered on integrating the arts across the curriculum. For thirty years, she taught general music and choir in Washoe County schools, serving both elementary and middle school students.

In 1985, Donnelly began collaborating with George L. O. Strid when their principal asked them to write a musical for Reading Week. That first project, The Million Dollar Mystery, launched a prolific partnership spanning over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals. She holds membership in ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP and continues to live in Reno with her husband.

Why we love this

Donnelly and Strid have built their entire catalog on writing music that actually works in real classrooms and rehearsals. This carol avoids tired arrangements and instead brings fresh energy to seasonal programming, making it a standout choice when you're tired of hearing the same interpretations year after year.

What to expect

The piece carries an infectious, upbeat quality that invites singers and listeners into genuine celebration rather than obligatory reverence. Donnelly and Strid's gift for accessibility means the music feels achievable for singers while still delivering genuine musical satisfaction.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for middle and high school choirs looking for engaging holiday repertoire that audiences actually enjoy hearing. It suits programs that want something more contemporary in spirit than traditional carol settings while still honoring the season.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start your rehearsal by listening to the recorded accompaniment together so students hear the intended style and tempo before learning their parts.
  • Isolate the melody line first and have students sing it unaccompanied to build confidence and intonation before layering harmony.
  • Use the SoundTrax accompaniment to support sectional rehearsals, especially when you need to lock in ensemble blend without full piano support.
  • Record a rehearsal performance and listen back as a choir to identify balance issues between vocal parts and the recorded track.

How to use it

Slot this into your winter concert as a crowd-pleasing centerpiece or opener that sets a warm, inclusive tone for the rest of your program. Its contemporary sensibility pairs well alongside both traditional carols and other modern holiday selections, giving you flexibility in how you shape your seasonal concert flow.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with rhythmic precision in a contemporary pop-influenced harmonic style
  • Balancing individual vocal lines while maintaining ensemble cohesion with recorded accompaniment
  • Interpreting stylistic nuance in secular holiday repertoire
  • Developing confidence in unfamiliar harmonic progressions through careful part-work
