More about this title

About the Composer: Peter Erskine

Peter Erskine

Peter Erskine began studying drums at age 4 and has built a career spanning jazz, classical, and commercial music across more than 700 recordings and film scores. His discography reflects an uncommon range: he has performed alongside Weather Report, Steely Dan, and the Yellowjackets; recorded with vocalists including Joni Mitchell and Diana Krall; and appeared as a soloist with major orchestras from Berlin to Tokyo. His work on the Fuzzy Music label documents his own trio projects and continues to expand the conversation around contemporary drumming.

Eskine served on the faculty at USC for over two decades and holds an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music. He is a member of the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame (inducted 2022), a two-time Grammy Award winner with nine additional nominations, and a multiple winner of Modern Drummer magazine's Jazz Drummer category. His clinic and masterclass work has influenced drummers worldwide, and his endorsements include Tama Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Remo Drum Heads, and Vic Firth sticks.

Why we love this

This collection reflects Erskine's genuine artistic taste rather than a theoretical exercise. Curating over 500 fills from his own playing experience and his decades of listening to world-class musicians means every entry has musical intent. The variety of styles and ensemble contexts makes it equally valuable for a student learning foundational vocabulary and a working drummer seeking fresh ideas in specific genres.

What to expect

Stepping into a master class with an incredibly open-minded musician. The fills span bebop, fusion, funk, rock, and beyond, reflecting decades of intelligent listening and playing across musical boundaries. Every page feels like a conversation with someone who genuinely loves the instrument and wants to expand what you can do with it.

Who it's for

Intermediate to advanced drummers seeking a comprehensive vocabulary of fills across multiple styles, and working musicians who need quick references for specific contexts and genres. Band directors and jazz ensemble leaders will find this useful as a teaching text and as a source of repertoire ideas for their students.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the transcriptions and charts before working through the written fills; understanding how Erskine uses these figures in real musical settings will deepen your interpretation beyond reading the page.
  • Use the audio demonstrations to hear the tempo, feel, and dynamics of each fill, then work backward to the notation to match what you're hearing.
  • Practice fills in context rather than as isolated exercises; play through the play-alongs to understand where each fill lands in a groove and how it connects to the music around it.
  • Vary your dynamics and tone color across the styles represented in the book; a jazz fill and a rock fill demand different articulation and approach to the cymbals.

How to use it

Assign sections of this book as supplementary material in a jazz ensemble or drum line curriculum, or use the play-alongs as a rhythmic foundation for improvisation lessons. Individual fills and charts can also anchor drum recital preparation, giving students a direct connection to how a world-class player approaches similar musical situations.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing drum fills across multiple styles (jazz, funk, fusion, rock, Latin)
  • Understanding fill placement and phrasing within ensemble contexts
  • Adapting single-stave notation to the full drumset with appropriate cymbal and tom voicings
  • Developing speed, control, and dynamic nuance through structured practice of idiomatic material
  • Recognizing stylistic differences in approach to the kick drum, snare, and cymbal accents
