About the Composer: Shirl Jae Atwell

Shirl Jae Atwell

Shirl Jae Atwell holds degrees from Kansas State Teachers College and the University of Louisville (Master of Music Theory/Composition), with additional post-graduate composition study at the University of South Carolina. Her body of work spans orchestral suites, string orchestra pieces, operas, and ballet scores, earning recognition including the 1984 Clifford Shaw Memorial Award for Kentucky Composers and the 1996 National School Orchestra Association composition contest.

Atwell's compositions have been premiered by ensembles across the United States, from regional orchestras to university and school groups. Her ballet Lucy, created with choreographer Alun Jones and premiered by the Louisville Ballet in 1999, received an Emmy Award for its televised production. Six of her scores are held in the permanent collection of the Paris Bibliothèque Internationale de Musique Contemporaine, reflecting her standing in contemporary classical music.

Why we love this

Atwell constructs this work with keen attention to what young orchestras can execute musically and what audiences enjoy hearing. The piece toggles between driving rhythmic sections and lyrical passages with enough textural variety to keep every section engaged without overwhelming them technically. The optional trumpet in C part shows she understands the realities of school ensembles, and the percussion-driven conclusion gives your percussion section a genuine moment to shine rather than relegating them to timekeeping.

What to expect

Esprit captures the energy and exuberance of young musicianship without sacrificing artistic integrity. Hard-hitting rhythmic passages build momentum and excitement, while the flowing, fanciful sections offer contrast and breathing room, creating a piece that keeps both players and listeners engaged throughout.

Who it's for

Young orchestra programs in grades 3-5 (typically middle school and early high school ensembles) will find this work accessible yet rewarding. Directors seeking a concert or festival piece that balances technical challenge with genuine musical substance will appreciate Atwell's craftsmanship.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the rhythmic drive in the hard-hitting sections against clarity in the ensemble. Young orchestras often rush when energy picks up; a steady conductor beat and periodic sectional work on articulation will keep the pulse grounded.
  • Shape the flowing passages with dynamic shaping that comes from within each section rather than relying on the conductor alone. This builds musicians' sensitivity to phrasing and ensemble listening.
  • Feature the percussion strategically in rehearsal as you approach the rousing conclusion. These players have worked to blend for most of the piece; give them explicit permission to project confidently when the final push arrives.
  • Consider the trumpet parts early in your planning. The availability of both C and B flat allows flexibility if your trumpet section has players at different reading levels, but coordinate parts and balance before rehearsal begins.

How to use it

Program this as a mid-set or closing work on a concert where you want to end with forward momentum and audience enthusiasm. It pairs well alongside standard grade 3 repertoire from other composers and works equally effectively in festival or contest settings given its built-in appeal and orchestral color.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing rhythmic precision with lyrical ensemble phrasing
  • Dynamic contrast between sections (hard-hitting versus flowing passages)
  • Rhythmic security and independence within a driving harmonic framework
  • Percussion ensemble balance and projection in a featured climactic role
  • Part flexibility (reading both trumpet in C and B flat as available)
