About the Composer: John Cacavas

John Cacavas brings decades of experience writing for orchestras across North America and beyond. After earning his degree in Composition and Theory from Northwestern University, he served as an arranger with the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C., where he refined his craft for ensemble writing.
His resume speaks for itself: over 400 television hours, 50 TV movies, and 15 feature films scored. Beyond the screen, Cacavas has left his mark on school orchestras through consistent contributions to repertoire that works for students. He has also authored two texts on the craft: Orchestration and Music Arranging and The Art of Writing Music.
Why we love this
Cacavas writes for string players as someone who understands what keeps them engaged. The parts stay musical across all sections rather than relegating violas and cellos to rhythmic padding, which means your entire ensemble feels valued. At Grade 3, it strikes that sweet spot where students tackle something substantial without drowning in technical demands.
What to expect
Escapade captures the spirit of its title: nimble, spirited, and unfussy. The music dances along with a lightness that energizes both players and audiences without veering into triviality.
Who it's for
String orchestras at the intermediate level who need repertoire that works for concert programming without sacrificing musicality. This piece serves orchestras looking to broaden their appeal beyond standard fare while keeping rehearsal time realistic.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the melodic lines between first violins and violas; Cacavas layers interest throughout, so resist the urge to let the firsts dominate the texture.
- Take the two-minute runtime as permission to shape each phrase with intention. This piece moves, and rushing undercuts its character.
- Let the cellos anchor the harmonic foundation. Their part carries weight in this work, so ensure they have clarity and presence.
How to use it
Pair this on a concert with a slower work to showcase range, or program it as a curtain raiser when you need something that engages immediately and clears the stage efficiently. Its two-minute duration makes it ideal for festivals or when you're balancing multiple pieces in a single rehearsal season.
Skills your students will build
- Shaping sustained phrases with dynamic control
- Reading and executing articulation patterns across multiple parts
- Balancing ensemble texture when melodic material shifts between sections
- Responding to straightforward but musical tempi changes
