About the Composer: Erik Morales

Erik Morales brings a distinctive melodic sensibility to every genre he touches, from classical to jazz to commercial music. Born in New York City in 1966, he began composing while still in high school and has since amassed over 150 published works spanning wind ensembles, orchestras, jazz groups, and chamber combinations. His trumpet writing in particular has earned recognition, including first-place finishes at the 2006 and 2008 National Trumpet Competitions and a premiere of his Concerto for Trumpet in C and Piano at the 2009 International Trumpet Guild conference.

Morales studied composition at Florida International University and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette in 1989. His career took root when a former band director hired him to arrange music for a high school marching band in 1985, an opportunity that opened doors to educational music publishing. Since 2002, his works have been performed and published worldwide. A core focus throughout his career has been balancing serious artistic merit with genuine accessibility for student musicians. Schools and organizations across the country continue to commission new works from him, and in 2016 he was inducted into the Louisiana Association for Jazz Education's Hall of Fame.
