Why we love this
Entranced delivers sophisticated emotional storytelling at a grade 3 level without sacrificing musical substance. The flamenco inspiration gives your band a fresh sound and cultural context that sparks genuine engagement, while the rhythmic and harmonic complexity (duple/triple variation, accidentals) ensures meaningful learning for advancing musicians.
What to expect
Entranced pulls you into a private struggle, oscillating between passionate urgency and wistful reflection. The flamenco rhythms and Spanish harmonic color create an intimate, almost theatrical atmosphere that invites the audience into a moment of genuine human conflict.
Who it's for
This score works well for developing concert bands ready to tackle rhythmic sophistication and emotional interpretation at the grade 3 level. Directors seeking contest or festival repertoire will find Entranced rewarding for both the ensemble and adjudicators.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the nostalgic motifs against the more driving sections; these contrasts carry the emotional arc of the internal struggle the piece portrays.
- Shape the flamenco-influenced passages with rubato and dynamic flexibility to capture the passionate character without losing rhythmic cohesion.
- Pay attention to the accidental notes as they often signal harmonic shifts tied to the decision-making narrative; highlight them slightly in sectional rehearsals so students understand their dramatic function.
- Use the recorded accompaniment as a reference for tempo consistency, especially through the duple/triple transitions where ensemble synchronization matters most.
How to use it
Program Entranced as a concert closer or centerpiece for a spring festival where its thematic depth and moderate technical demands will impress both judges and audiences. It pairs well on ballots alongside other grade 3 concert pieces that explore cultural influences or emotional storytelling.
