Why we love this
Balmages strips away rhythmic complexity to let young musicians sink into style and expression. With no eighth notes in the wind parts, your band can concentrate entirely on building the arc from mystery to confidence, making this an ideal choice for ensembles still developing their tonal foundation and musical maturity.
What to expect
Enchantment opens like a spell being cast, with uncertainty hanging in the air. As it unfolds, confidence builds, the texture deepens, and the band emerges into a fully realized moment of power and clarity, leaving audiences transported.
Who it's for
Beginning and early intermediate concert bands that want substantial musical content without rhythmic hurdles. This work serves bands at the ½ level who are ready to explore mood, transformation, and stylistic maturity.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the opening section with a lighter dynamic and slower note decay; let silence and space create the sense of mystery before the transformation begins.
- Balance the gradual intensification across all sections by marking rehearsal points where each wind choir begins to add weight and presence; this prevents the climax from feeling rushed.
- Conduct the final powerful section with committed, deliberate gesture to match the confident character the composer intends; the band will respond to your conviction.
How to use it
Program this as an opener or closer that establishes artistic intent beyond technical display. Its journey from intrigue to assurance pairs naturally with more energetic selections, creating a program arc that balances introspection with exuberance.
Skills your students will build
- Managing dynamic contrast and building momentum over longer phrases
- Distinguishing and sustaining different tonal qualities within a single work
- Responding to expressive conducting gestures that shape emotional narrative
- Blending as a full ensemble while maintaining individual voice independence
