About the Composer: Shirl Jae Atwell
Shirl Jae Atwell studied composition at the University of South Carolina following her degrees from Kansas State Teachers College and the University of Louisville. Her work has earned national recognition, including the 1996 National School Orchestra Association composition contest win for her string piece Modus á Four and the 1997 Texas Orchestra Directors Association prize for Drifen.
Atwell's creative reach extends beyond orchestral writing into opera and ballet. Her opera Sagegrass made its New York City debut in 1984, and she collaborated with choreographer Alun Jones on Lucy, a ballet commissioned for the Louisville Ballet in 1999 that was inspired by the famous paleontological discovery. Six of her scores were selected for the permanent collection of the Paris Bibliothèque Internationale de Musique Contemporaine, reflecting her standing in contemporary music circles.
