Description
Cast in G minor, ELEGY IN THE BAROQUE STYLE is a somber work written in memory of the composer's mentor and lifelong friend Kenneth Bloomquist. Its emotional introduction eventually eases into a baroque-style chaconne. A chaconne is a set of variations based on a repeated chord progression, as opposed to a passacaglia, which is a set of variations over a ground bass. In this case, the core of the piece is structured over eleven repetitions (variations) of the chord progression that is initially stated in trombones and tubas. Each variation is distinct in structure and scoring. The work concludes with an extended coda, finally settling on a low-voiced g minor chord in low brass and bassoons.

More about this title

About the Composer: James Barnes

James Barnes stands among the most performed American composers for wind band, with a catalog spanning concert works, film scores, and educational pieces that have shaped band programs nationwide. His compositional voice balances accessibility with genuine artistic depth, creating music that challenges young musicians while remaining emotionally direct and rewarding to perform.

Why we love this

Barnes gives you a structural framework that makes baroque form tangible for student musicians. The repeated chord progression anchors eleven distinct variations, so players hear exactly how composers develop ideas, and each section reveals new orchestration without losing the musical thread.

What to expect

A quiet descent into reflection. The opening speaks with restraint and genuine feeling before the baroque architecture takes hold, building contemplative momentum through its variations. The final resolution settles like a stone into still water, leaving the room hushed.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 4 level who are ready to explore formal structure and thematic development beyond simple sectional progressions. This works equally well for ensembles seeking a memorial or commemorative piece and those wanting to deepen student understanding of baroque compositional techniques.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize the trombone and tuba statement of the chord progression in the opening; this is the DNA of everything that follows, and clarity here makes the subsequent variations land with impact.
  • Balance the upper woodwind figurations carefully during the variations. They tend to overshadow the bass progression if not managed with a light touch.
  • Shape the extended coda with patience. Resist the urge to rush the final descent into the low g minor chord; the weight and resonance of that conclusion reward a deliberate approach.

How to use it

Pair this with lighter or more energetic works to create a program that breathes and reflects. Its length and emotional arc make it an ideal second half opener, giving the audience a moment of repose before moving forward in the concert. It also serves composers and ensembles seeking a respectful tribute or remembrance piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing and playing variations over a repeating harmonic progression
  • Identifying baroque formal structures (chaconne) within contemporary concert music
  • Balancing independent melodic voices while maintaining harmonic awareness
  • Sustaining ensemble focus through subtle shifts in orchestration and texture
  • Shaping long, lyrical phrases with restraint and dynamic control
