About the Composer: Michael Oare

Michael Oare has shaped young musicians for over three decades, first as Director of Bands at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he built a program that earned superior ratings for 32 of his 33 years. A graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk with degrees in both composition and music education, Oare brings equal skill to the podium, the composer's desk, and the adjudication panel. His works for developing bands appear regularly in GIA Publications' "Teaching Music Through Performance" series, and he maintains active involvement with professional organizations including ASCAP and Phi Beta Mu.
Since 2015, Oare has served as conductor of the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia Concert Band, working with musicians in grades 7-9 across southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. His contributions to music education have earned recognition including the 2016 Chesapeake Public Schools' Middle School Teacher of the Year award and two Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association. Beyond his work in schools, he performs with the Virginia Wind Symphony and remains deeply connected to the southeastern Virginia music community.
Why we love this
Oare writes with a director's instinct for what young musicians need: music that sounds accomplished without demanding technical ferocity. Maintaining a single tempo throughout the three-minute span removes a major source of coordination difficulty, allowing your students to focus on musicality, intonation, and the craft of ensemble playing. The tuneful melodies and fresh harmonic language deliver genuine excitement that audiences recognize, making this an ideal choice for a program that needs to energize without exhausting your developing players.
What to expect
Buoyant and bright, the work radiates the kind of unbridled enthusiasm that comes from young musicians discovering what they can accomplish together. The harmonic language is straightforward but never bland, and the pacing ensures momentum carries through without relying on rapid passage work or technical display.
Who it's for
Grade 2 bands working toward confident ensemble execution and musical maturity. This work suits both developing programs building foundational skills and more experienced groups seeking rewarding, energetic concert material.
How to get the most out of it
- Treat the consistent tempo as an opportunity to build rhythmic security across all sections rather than as a limitation. Lock in the pulse early and have players tap along during rehearsals without instruments to establish ownership of the time.
- Shape the tuneful melodies by releasing at phrase endings rather than cutting off; this allows the forward motion to breathe and prevents the piece from feeling mechanical despite its single tempo.
- Balance the fresh harmonies by having each section identify which voices carry the primary melodic line in each phrase, then shade harmonic accompaniment appropriately below.
How to use it
Open a concert with this piece to set an optimistic tone and immediately engage your audience. Its three-minute length and uncomplicated single-tempo structure also make it suitable as a bridge between more substantial works on a full program, or as a solid independent selection for a chamber band festival or mid-year performance.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining consistent tempo across a complete work
- Blending harmonic voices with clear hierarchy of melodic and accompaniment lines
- Shaping lyrical phrasing in a straightforward harmonic context
- Balancing energy and control within a bright, celebratory character
