John Kinyon earned degrees from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, followed by an honorary doctorate from Limestone College in South Carolina. His career spans instrumental music direction, music department leadership, work as educational director for Warner Brothers Music in New York, and a faculty position at the University of Miami.

Kinyon has composed over 250 educational works for Alfred, spanning grades 1-3 across marches, ballads, overtures, and other forms. His catalog reflects decades of direct experience in school music programs, giving him insight into what young musicians need to grow.
