About the Composer: Benjamin Harlan

Benjamin Harlan

Benjamin Harlan serves as Dean of the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, bringing decades of experience in sacred music composition and instruction. His published works span choral, keyboard, and handbell repertoire across multiple major publishing houses, and he has received ASCAP awards continuously since 1990. Harlan holds degrees from Baylor University (B.M. and M.M.) and earned his D.M.A. from SBTS, complementing his active membership in the American Choral Directors Association and the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference.

Throughout his career, Harlan has held leadership positions at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Emmanuel Baptist Church in Shreveport, and First Baptist Church in St. Francisville, where he shaped music programs as both composer and minister. His work reflects a deep understanding of what congregations and choirs need: music that is both spiritually resonant and musically substantial.

Why we love this

Harlan's three-suite structure gives you genuine flexibility in how you program Easter music this year. Rather than hunting for a single standalone anthem, you have a complete cantata framework that works as a whole or lets you extract individual suites to pair with your existing repertoire. The orchestration elevates what might otherwise be a standard church music offering into something with real sophistication and depth.

What to expect

The trilogy structure unfolds like a journey through the Easter narrative, moving through distinct musical suites that each carry their own character and emotional weight. You experience moments of introspection and hope woven together with orchestral textures that create space for both intimacy and grandeur.

Who it's for

Church choirs and school choruses with access to orchestral accompaniment (whether live or digital), particularly those seeking substantive Easter programming that goes beyond typical single-anthem repertoire. This work serves ensembles that want to present a complete musical narrative within a concert or service context rather than sampling multiple unrelated pieces.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the choir against the full orchestra by having your singers focus on clear diction and supported tone; the instrumental writing will fill the harmonic space without requiring oversinging.
  • Study each suite independently before integrating them into a single performance, paying particular attention to key relationships and transitions between sections.
  • Secure quality orchestral parts well in advance if your group plans to use live instruments; coordinate rehearsal schedules early with any guest musicians or local ensembles.

How to use it

Consider programming this as your centerpiece for an Easter concert, letting the three suites anchor your program with the freedom to add smaller works before or after. Alternatively, use individual suites within an Easter service where timing and liturgical flow matter; the modular design means you are not locked into performing all three at once.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained singing within longer formal structures
  • Blend and balance with orchestral accompaniment
  • Interpretation of text across multiple connected movements
  • Reading sophisticated harmonic language
  • Responding to varied tempos and moods within a unified work
