About the Artist: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin holds degrees in piano performance from Furman University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he also taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His concert career has taken him across the United States and Mexico, including performances with symphony orchestras and a broadcast recital from Ex-convento del Carman that reached national audiences. As the winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, he performed with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra and has appeared in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to regional theaters.

Martin's primary focus now centers on church music and worship contexts, where his compositions and arrangements are heard in hundreds of congregations across the United States and Canada. His output spans remarkable stylistic range, consistently surprising audiences with his versatility across genres. He resides in Austin, Texas with his family.

Why we love this

Martin threads two musical worlds together with genuine skill here, allowing a contemporary Christian classic to inhabit the same emotional space as a beloved hymn without either losing its identity. The seamless genre transitions give your singers real musical satisfaction; they're not just jumping between styles but experiencing how faith expressions across different eras can coexist and even strengthen each other. Directors appreciate arrangements this thoughtfully crafted because they work equally well in traditional Easter services and contemporary worship settings.

What to expect

Joyful and affirming; the arrangement radiates confidence in its celebration of Resurrection. You hear the exuberance of early Contemporary Christian music meeting the timeless weight of a classic hymn, both voices strong and neither apologizing for its place in the service.

Who it's for

Easter services wanting to honor both traditional hymnody and the vibrant energy of contemporary Christian music. This works beautifully for choirs comfortable with both genres and for churches seeking a single anthem that bridges generational tastes in worship.

How to get the most out of it

  • Honor the distinct character of each section by resisting the urge to smooth over the style shift. The contrast itself is the point; let your singers feel the movement from one musical language to the other.
  • Pay close attention to the orchestration cues in the score. Martin's instrumentation choices carry the narrative forward, so ensure your accompaniment balances are clear and intentional throughout.
  • Build the festive energy gradually through the piece rather than starting at full volume. The arrangement's arc relies on a sense of building acclamation, which lands with more power when you shape the dynamics carefully.

How to use it

Reserve this for your Easter Sunday morning centerpiece, where it can anchor the service's musical proclamation. The pairing of genres makes it an ideal choice for services that blend traditional and contemporary elements throughout the year, allowing it to feel both special and at home in your musical culture.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending vocal production across contrasting stylistic idioms
  • Singing with conviction in both hymn-based and contemporary Christian contexts
  • Responding to orchestral accompaniment with sensitivity to varying textures
  • Maintaining musical integrity during genre transitions
