Description
George Whitefield Chadwick (1854-1931) was an American composer. Along with John Knowles Paine, Horatio Parker, Amy Beach, Arthur Foote, and Edward MacDowell, he was among those composers in what is called the Second New England School of American composers of the late 19th century. Chadwick's works are influenced by the Realist movement in the arts, characterized by a down-to-earth depiction of people's lives. His works included several operas, three symphonies, five string quartets, tone poems, incidental music, songs and choral anthems. Along with a group of other composers collectively known as the Boston Six, Chadwick was one of those responsible for the first significant body of concert music by composers from the United States. Easter Morn: Reverie was written around 1914 for either solo violin or cello and piano. A version with orchestra accompaniment is also available in the Edwin F. Kalmus catalog.

More about this title

About the Composer: George Whitefield Chadwick

George Whitefield Chadwick (1854-1931) stands at the center of American classical music's formative years. A founder of the Boston Six and a leading voice of the Second New England School, he composed with the conviction that American concert music could equal the sophistication of European traditions while remaining rooted in authentic expression.

Chadwick's output spans operas, symphonies, string quartets, and intimate chamber works, all marked by his gift for memorable melody and orchestral color. His influence extended beyond composition through his teaching at the New England Conservatory, where he shaped a generation of American musicians and composers.

Why we love this

Easter Morn captures the essence of what made Chadwick a master of the lyric line. The piece offers violinists a rewarding opportunity to work with genuinely American concert music that balances technical grace with emotional directness, without the dramatics or virtuosity requirements that can overshadow musical storytelling.

What to expect

A quiet moment of reflection and gentle spiritual contemplation. The piece unfolds with the unhurried grace of early morning light, its melodies suggesting gratitude and peace without sentimentality. The violin and piano create an intimate dialogue that feels both personal and timeless.

Who it's for

Intermediate to advanced violinists seeking repertoire beyond the standard Romantic canon will find Easter Morn ideally suited to their development. Violinists and pianists preparing recital programs value its accessible yet substantive character, and music educators appreciate its role in introducing students to American classical composers of genuine historical significance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody with long, singing phrases rather than emphasizing individual notes; the reverie character depends on sustained, connected lines that reflect the piece's meditative quality.
  • Collaborate closely with the pianist on tempo flexibility in the passages that suggest harmonic movement; Chadwick's harmonies often benefit from gentle rubato that respects the piano's voice leading.
  • Pay attention to dynamic gradations within Chadwick's moderate dynamic range; the interplay between piano and violin relies on subtle shifts rather than dramatic contrasts.

How to use it

Easter Morn suits a chamber or recital context beautifully, especially in spring programming or as part of an American music emphasis. The piece can anchor a short recital set devoted to 19th-century American composers or pair naturally with other works for violin and piano that explore the lyric, intimate side of the repertoire.
