Description
Marie-Auguste Durand (1830--1909), a multifaceted Frenchman, was a composer, editor, music critic, businessman, and advocate for contemporary music. As a composer, he wrote much sacred and secular vocal music as well as piano music. The six waltzes in this edition were influenced by the waltzes of Frédéric Chopin (1810--1849). They share a similar formal plan of presenting short sections, some different and some repeated, forming a successful balance of variety and unity. Editor Edward Francis has suggested fingerings, pedaling, and metronome markings to aid students and performers. In addition, the prefatory matter discusses performance considerations and includes a formal analysis of each waltz.

More about this title

About the Composer: Marie-Auguste Durand

Marie-Auguste Durand (1830-1909) was a French composer and publisher whose career spanned the musical transitions of the nineteenth century. Beyond his work as a composer of sacred and secular vocal music, Durand established himself as a serious voice in piano literature, drawing inspiration from Romantic traditions while maintaining his own distinct sensibility. His role as a music critic and advocate for contemporary composition shaped his artistic outlook, and his business acumen as a publisher gave him deep insight into what pianists actually needed to perform.

Why we love this

These waltzes sit at the intersection of Chopin's influence and Durand's own compositional voice, offering advanced pianists repertoire that demands musicality without the virtuosic pyrotechnics that dominate the waltz genre. Edward Francis's editorial work transforms these pieces into genuinely useful classroom and recital material: the fingerings, pedaling suggestions, and metronome markings remove unnecessary interpretive obstacles, while the formal analysis deepens understanding of how these waltzes achieve their balance of variety and unity. A pianist working through all six gains both technical refinement and a clearer grasp of Romantic form than most single-piece study provides.

What to expect

These waltzes possess the elegance and restraint of salon music without sacrificing harmonic depth or formal sophistication. Each piece balances the lilting inevitability of three-beat rhythm with moments of genuine lyrical beauty, creating a sense of refinement that feels both accessible and substantive.

Who it's for

Late intermediate and early advanced pianists preparing for recitals, competitions, or advanced study benefit from Durand's measured approach to the waltz form. Teachers seeking multi-piece repertoire that develops both technical facility and structural understanding will find these six waltzes manageable within a semester of focused study. Students already familiar with Chopin's waltzes will recognize stylistic kinship while discovering a composer worthy of deeper exploration.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape each section's approach to the pedal according to Francis's suggestions, which account for harmonic rhythm and the acoustic properties of each key; resist the impulse to sustain indiscriminately, as clarity of voice leading is essential at this level
  • Use the metronome markings as starting points rather than destinations, adjusting tempo to highlight the character shifts between sections while maintaining the inherent forward motion of the waltz rhythm
  • Attend to the repeated and contrasting sections as architectural elements; slight dynamic shaping and touch differentiation between a statement and its return will illuminate Durand's formal strategy without sacrificing elegance
  • Balance the dance-like lilt of the triple meter against the harmonic sophistication underneath; neither rhythmic precision nor coloristic depth should overshadow the other

How to use it

Pair any of these waltzes with works by Chopin or Schumann to highlight Durand's place in the Romantic lineage, or program one as a graceful interlude between weightier contemporary works. The collection's variety means you can select pieces of different keys and characters to construct a thematic recital program, or introduce them across multiple years of a student's development without repetition.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing detailed editorial markings (fingerings, pedaling, tempo indications)
  • Balancing melodic phrase shaping with structural clarity in ternary and rondo forms
  • Controlling the waltz rhythm with consistent pulse while varying touch and tone color
  • Harmonic analysis and voice leading awareness in Romantic keyboard writing
  • Pedal technique matched to harmonic rhythm and texture rather than duration alone
  • Interpreting repeated sections with subtle variation and development
