More about this title

About the Author: Peter Erskine

Peter Erskine

Peter Erskine began studying drums at age 4 and built a career spanning every conceivable musical context. His discography includes over 700 albums and film scores, work with major jazz ensembles (Weather Report, Steps Ahead, the Yellowjackets), collaborations with vocalists like Diana Krall and Joni Mitchell, and partnerships with composers and improvisers from Chick Corea to Pat Metheny. He has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras worldwide and served on the faculty at the University of Southern California for more than two decades.

Eskine's contributions to percussion education extend beyond the bandstand. He was inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 2022, earned an honorary doctorate from Berklee School of Music, and has won two Grammy Awards with nine additional nominations. His clinics, seminars, and teaching have shaped generations of drummers seeking depth and versatility across jazz, classical, and contemporary music.

Why we love this

Erskine brings unmatched credibility to the fundamentals. This volume strips away complexity and focuses on what actually matters: solid technique, clear thinking, and the building blocks that unlock everything else. A master who has thrived across jazz, orchestral, and contemporary contexts knows exactly which concepts transfer everywhere.

What to expect

Clear-eyed and encouraging. Erskine assumes you're serious about improvement and respects your time by cutting to what matters. The instruction builds progressively, with each concept supporting the next, so you move from confusion to confidence.

Who it's for

Drummers at an intermediate level who want to deepen their command of essential techniques and understand the reasoning behind them. Anyone preparing for ensemble work in jazz or contemporary contexts will benefit from Erskine's systematic approach to coordination, independence, and stylistic awareness.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the recorded accompaniment to internalize time feel without relying solely on your internal metronome, especially during exercises that demand consistent pulse across changing dynamics.
  • Work through exercises slowly enough that you can hear what your hands and feet are actually doing; speed follows clean mechanics, not the reverse.
  • Return to fundamental patterns repeatedly throughout your practice week, not just once; muscle memory and musical understanding both require repetition over time.

How to use it

Assign sections of this book as technical assignments alongside ensemble rehearsal, particularly when your group is working on pieces requiring specific rhythmic or dynamic control. The accompanying audio recordings make it equally valuable for independent practice and studio coaching sessions.

Skills your students will build

  • Coordination between hands and feet across various rhythmic subdivisions
  • Grip, posture, and approach to rebound for improved control and endurance
  • Independence and voice separation on the drumset
  • Time feel and pulse consistency across different tempos and styles
  • Reading and executing rhythmic notation with accuracy and musicality
  • Building exercises into practice routines with clear progression
