About the Composer: Glen Hansard
Glen Hansard is an Irish singer-songwriter and guitarist whose work spans multiple ensembles and decades of musical evolution. He gained international recognition as the lead vocalist and guitarist of The Frames, later won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly" (from the film Once), and has continued to develop his solo career since 2012 while occasionally collaborating with The Swell Season.
Hansard's compositions are rooted in folk and rock traditions but shaped by intimate storytelling and genuine emotional vulnerability. His guitar work ranges from fingerpicked acoustic foundations to fuller arrangements that build emotional resonance through careful instrumental layering, making his music accessible to guitarists at various skill levels while rewarding more advanced players with nuanced arrangements.
Why we love this
This TAB collection captures an artist whose songs resonate across contexts, from stripped-down coffeehouse settings to full band arrangements. The variety here spans eighteen songs that showcase distinctive melodic writing and rhythmic sophistication without relying on excessive technical fireworks, making this ideal for guitarists who want to build a repertoire of songs that actually move people.
What to expect
These songs inhabit the space between introspection and connection, built on guitar work that feels both honest and carefully constructed. There's a warmth to the arrangements that comes from folk traditions, but an underlying emotional complexity that prevents anything from feeling sentimental or predictable.
Who it's for
Intermediate to advanced guitarists seeking folk and rock material with genuine artistic substance will find this collection rewarding. Solo performers building a setlist of songs that resonate emotionally, as well as band guitarists looking for well-crafted arrangements that sit comfortably within group contexts, can draw extensively from these nineteen tracks.
How to get the most out of it
- Attend closely to fingerpicking patterns in the verses; they often carry as much emotional weight as the melody itself, so precision in timing matters more than speed.
- Use the TAB to identify where chords shift from open positions to barre formations, which frequently signals a change in emotional intensity or section function.
- Study the dynamic shape of each song's progression rather than treating verse and chorus as isolated sections; Hansard's arrangements build through incremental textural changes rather than dramatic gear shifts.
- Reference a recording alongside the TAB to hear how sustain and vibrato are used to extend emotional moments, especially in the outro sections.
How to use it
Feature one or two selections in a coffeehouse concert or intimate recital setting, where Hansard's lyrical directness and guitar-focused arrangements shine without competing with larger ensembles. A guitarist building a solo album or repertoire for a YouTube channel or streaming platform will find cohesion across these eighteen songs, which span enough stylistic ground to demonstrate range without fragmenting listener focus.
Skills your students will build
- Fingerpicking patterns in folk and alternative rock idioms
- Chord voicing choices and voice leading in open and barre positions
- Phrasing and dynamics across longer song forms
- Reading TAB alongside standard notation for rhythm and timing clarity
- Accompaniment vs. lead guitar roles within ensemble contexts
