Description
Dramatic Overture is a lively, celebratory piece commissioned to mark the 80th anniversary of the band. It begins with a stark, powerful introduction of the main theme by the trombones and percussion, soon joined by the other brass before the music moves into a dance-like allegro section. Dramatic brass statements, scampering woodwinds and long, soaring melodies dominate this allegro section until the band slows once again, to present a dramatic fanfare based on the basic intervals of the opening theme. The work then ends with a flashy, energetic coda.

More about this title

About the Composer: James Barnes

James Barnes is a composer whose concert band works have become central to the repertoire at the Grade 4 and 5 levels. His writing consistently balances accessibility with musical substance, creating pieces that challenge students while remaining genuinely enjoyable to perform and hear.

Barnes has a gift for structural clarity and memorable thematic material. His orchestrations give every section of the band moments to shine, which makes his scores particularly effective for teaching ensemble balance and sectional independence.

Why we love this

This piece arrives fully formed as a concert experience rather than an exercise. The journey from stark introduction through dancing allegro to dramatic fanfare and final coda gives your band a real narrative arc to perform, and that narrative propels students through technical demands they might otherwise find grinding.

What to expect

Ceremonial yet playful. The opening commands attention like a formal presentation, but the allegro section bubbles with humor and joy. There's genuine buoyancy in the dance rhythms and a sense of collective celebration that makes this feel like a piece written for an occasion that actually mattered.

Who it's for

Grade 4 bands looking for a substantial opening work or a concert closer with real impact. This suits groups with developing technical skills but solid musicianship; the writing demands control and ensemble awareness more than extreme velocity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the trombone and percussion entrance at the top. This opening needs to feel like a unified gesture, not a collection of soloists. One breath, one sound.
  • Clarify the distinction between the main theme's basic intervals and how they're transformed in the fanfare section. Students should hear and feel the relationship, even if they don't consciously name it.
  • Give the scampering woodwind passages room to breathe rhythmically. They're energetic, not frantic. A slight elasticity in the tempo makes them shimmer rather than blur.
  • Shape the soaring melodies with long-line phrasing rather than phrase-to-phrase hits. These lines define the character of the allegro section and deserve legit support from your bass voices.

How to use it

Open a concert with this to establish that something significant is happening. The piece announces itself and sets a confident tone for everything that follows. Alternatively, place it near the end of a program when your band is warmed up and confident enough to nail the dynamic contrasts.

Skills your students will build

  • Ensemble balance between sustained harmony and active melodic lines
  • Sectional independence, particularly brass and woodwind coordination
  • Dynamic control across a wide range from stark openings to soaring passages
  • Thematic recall and development, recognizing how intervals evolve
  • Rhythmic precision in dance-like allegro sections
  • Sustained phrase conception and support for long melodic lines
