Why we love this

A director who knows how to make singers smile while keeping things musically solid. Rothenberg captures that nostalgic 1950s juke-box groove with genuine charm, and the staging possibilities built into the score turn a novelty number into genuine theater. Your choir will want to rehearse this one.

What to expect

Stepping into a 1950s diner, complete with chrome and neon. The slow-rockin' groove settles in immediately, mixing nostalgia with genuine humor. It's playful without being juvenile, and the arrangement gives every voice part something rewarding to sing.

Who it's for

SATB choirs looking for a Christmas program piece that entertains without sacrificing musicality. This works equally well for high school choirs, college groups, and community ensembles who want to close a winter concert on an upbeat, theatrical note.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic swing of the 1950s style; this isn't a straight, metronomic read. Let the groove breathe slightly, especially in the rhythm section.
  • Use the staging flexibility as a rehearsal tool. Blocking movement early helps singers connect the text to physicality, which deepens their engagement with the character of the piece.
  • Balance the men's bass line so it grounds the harmony without overpowering the upper voices. The novelty works best when all four parts sit in conversation.

How to use it

Place this near the end of your Christmas concert as a mood-lifter after more traditional repertoire. The built-in staging possibilities make it a natural anchor for a themed concert or a show-stopping finale that leaves audiences grinning as they leave.
