Why we love this

Althouse knows exactly what young choirs need: an arrangement that teaches quickly without sacrificing musical substance. The pop-contemporary vocal sound gives singers a sound world they recognize and enjoy, while the bright, driving accompaniment keeps energy high from start to finish. This is the kind of piece that lands immediately and builds confidence.

What to expect

Bright and propulsive, with the spiritual tradition meeting contemporary rhythmic energy. The arrangement honors the depth of the song while giving it a forward-moving, modern voice that speaks to young singers.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves young and developing 2- and 3-part choirs looking for material that builds skills without demanding years of experience. The quick-learn format makes it ideal for groups working with limited rehearsal time or preparing concert repertoire on a shorter timeline.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the bright accompaniment with clear diction so the lyrics cut through without vocal strain. The pop-contemporary style invites a relaxed, conversational tone.
  • Use the optional staging to strengthen engagement and audience connection. Even simple movement can transform how young singers inhabit the spiritual tradition.
  • Lock in the rhythmic drive early in rehearsal. This arrangement lives in its forward momentum, so precision in the accompaniment line pays off quickly in performance.

How to use it

Program this as an opener or contrast piece on a concert featuring mixed sacred and secular repertoire. The rousing arrangement and optional staging make it particularly effective as a crowd-connecting moment that showcases your ensemble's personality and engagement with the music.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and balancing 2- and 3-part voicing
  • Sustaining rhythmic precision in contemporary pop-influenced arrangements
  • Performing spiritual traditions with stylistic authenticity
