About the Composer: John Kinyon

John Kinyon

John Kinyon studied at Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, earning an honorary doctorate from Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina. He spent decades in music education as an instrumental director, department head, and educational director for Warner Brothers Music before joining the faculty at the University of Miami.

Kinyon has composed over 250 works for Alfred Music, establishing himself as one of the most prolific voices in educational band literature. His catalog spans grades 1 through 3 across multiple styles, from marches to ballads to concert overtures, all designed with the developing band in mind.

Why we love this

Kinyon crafts dynamic contrasts that keep young players engaged without overwhelming them. A Grade 2 piece that delivers genuine character and energy makes it invaluable for concert programming, festival play, and the kind of music that reminds students why they started band in the first place.

What to expect

Sharp, spirited, and full of unexpected turns. The piece balances mischief with musicality, moving through contrasting moods that keep the ensemble and audience alert and engaged from start to finish.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands seeking a showpiece with genuine musical substance and festival appeal. Directors programming Halloween concerts or looking for a piece that excels in both contest and concert settings will find strong material here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the dynamic shifts deliberately; the contrasts between sections are the piece's backbone, so bring clarity to each transition rather than smoothing over the changes.
  • Balance the fiery moments with precision in articulation. Energy at Grade 2 comes from clean tonguing and unified releases, not just louder volume.
  • Let the Halloween theme breathe in rehearsal without overplaying it. The music speaks for itself; avoid theatrical exaggeration that undermines musicality.

How to use it

Program this as a second-half opener to shift energy after slower pieces, or as a highlight in a thematic concert. Its Grade 2 accessibility and festival designation make it equally suited to October performances and spring competition schedules.

Skills your students will build

  • Dynamic contrast and the discipline required to execute sharp transitions between musical ideas
  • Rhythmic precision and unified articulation in energetic passages
  • Reading and responding to frequent style and tempo changes within a single piece
