About the Composer: Christopher Fox

Christopher Fox

Christopher Fox directs choruses at Glenelg High School in Howard County, Maryland, where he has shaped the musical development of hundreds of young singers. A prolific composer and conductor in demand for clinics across the country, Fox has created over one hundred works in the past decade; his pieces are published internationally by Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Santa Barbara Music Press and have earned multiple Editor's Choice recognitions.

Fox holds degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Loyola University Baltimore, where he completed his Kodály certification through The American Kodály Institute. He has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Mary Washington Theatre Department and has been commissioned by the VCDA Junior All-State Treble Choir, Virginia Organization of Kodály Educators, Penn State University, and numerous district honors choirs. A two-time Teacher of the Year honoree, Fox combines his experience as an educator with his gift for writing music that speaks directly to young voices.

Why we love this

Fox brings textural sophistication and rhythmic interest to a flexible voicing scheme that actually works in the real world. The piece accommodates TB, TTB, TBB, and TTBB formations without sounding compromised in any configuration, making it genuinely useful for programs with changing enrollment or mixed-voice situations. The multicultural context and concert-ready professional sound justify programming it at both festival and concert settings.

What to expect

The multicultural elements create a sense of musical travel and discovery. The piece carries both energy and thoughtfulness, with moments of textural clarity that feel contemporary yet accessible.

Who it's for

This works for middle school through high school choirs with flexible voicing needs. It's particularly suited to programs seeking concert and festival repertoire that stands out without excessive technical demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the recorded accompaniment to establish the piece's rhythmic foundation, especially if your choir is learning independent parts unfamiliar to their typical repertoire.
  • Balance the outer voices carefully; the piece's multicultural character depends on clear articulation of both the top and bottom lines.
  • Attend to dynamic shaping within phrases rather than treating each section as a block; this reveals the harmonic movement Fox has embedded throughout.

How to use it

Program this as a concert showcase piece that demonstrates your choir's versatility and cultural awareness. Its professional recording quality makes it equally effective in festival settings where you want to present singers at their best without vocal strain.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in mixed-voice configurations across multiple voicing options
  • Rhythmic independence within a contemporary harmonic language
  • Clear articulation in multicultural musical idioms
  • Blend and balance across changing voicing assignments
