About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell discovered composition through his high school English classes, drawing inspiration from the literature he was studying and creating pieces for his school choir's radio broadcasts. His formal training in composition came later, during his senior year at East Carolina University, but by then he was already writing with intention and purpose. A chance meeting with publisher Lynn Freeman Olson in the early 1980s validated his instinct to share his work; his first Alfred publication, the three-book series Something Special (1990), became widely adopted in studios and classrooms across the country.

Now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hartsell maintains an active career as teacher, accompanist, clinician, and church musician. With over 60 published collections and solos to his name, his output reflects a consistent philosophy: that music written for students should engage them musically without compromising artistic integrity. His pieces are known for their lyrical quality and their ability to inspire players at every level.

Why we love this

Hartsell's gift for melody shines in every phrase, and this piece demonstrates why his work has remained relevant in studios and schools for decades. The writing respects the student's growing musicality while staying grounded in genuinely achievable technique, making it a smart choice when you need something that sounds better than it plays.

What to expect

Serene and contemplative, with the quality of watching light gradually emerge across a landscape. The piece unfolds with quiet purpose, inviting the player to find beauty in restraint and clarity in simplicity.

Who it's for

Intermediate piano students ready to move beyond basic technique and play pieces with genuine musical character. Also suitable for recital preparation or as a repertoire builder for students developing their own performance identity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the main melodic line with gentle dynamic shaping; let the accompaniment support rather than overwhelm.
  • Explore tempo flexibility around the title itself. Daybreak imagery often benefits from a contemplative opening that gradually brightens.
  • Balance the visual interest of the notation with musical coherence. Three pages can feel sprawling if you don't listen for the larger harmonic arc.

How to use it

Pair this with other lyrical works to create a program that emphasizes musicality and emotional depth rather than technical display. It works well as an opening or closing number on a student recital, particularly in spring when the daybreak imagery resonates naturally with the season.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing and musical line in a sustained melodic context
  • Dynamic control across longer passages
  • Interpreting descriptive titles through musical choices
  • Hand independence and textural clarity between melody and accompaniment
