Dengler's setting brings genuine emotional weight to a text that could easily slip into sentimentality. The four-part writing is singable without being simplistic, and the harmonic choices support the message without overwhelming a volunteer choir.
What to expect
The piece unfolds with intimate sincerity, allowing the text to shine without elaborate musical gesture. Dengler's harmonies feel both straightforward and deeply felt, creating the sense of a choir singing something they truly believe.
Who it's for
This octavo works for intermediate SATB choirs that need accessible yet emotionally meaningful repertoire. It suits sacred concert programming, community choirs, and church services where the text resonates with your ensemble's values.
How to get the most out of it
Balance the sopranos and altos in the opening phrases so neither voice dominates the harmony. Both lines carry equal melodic importance.
Approach the dynamic shifts gradually rather than abruptly. Let crescendos and diminuendos breathe across the full musical line.
Anchor the bass line; it will ground the harmonic movement and give the tenors more freedom in their upper register.
How to use it
Pair this with other contemporary choral works in a concert focused on spiritual themes or community values. It also stands alone effectively as a standalone concert piece or as part of a service program where you want the text to take center stage.
Skills your students will build
