About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over three decades through her prolific output of accessible, singable repertoire. An ASCAP award recipient annually since 1987, she has published more than 600 choral works and 75 larger musicals and songbooks. Her conducting appearances span major venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, and she served as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications for Alfred Music, where she developed resources for educators nationwide.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. She is a Pillar of Leadership honoree with the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College, where she serves on the Board of Trustees. She lives in North Carolina with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

This musical brings genuine charm and character to your holiday program without demanding elaborate staging or complex choreography. Albrecht and her collaborators write with real sensitivity to what elementary and middle school singers can execute joyfully, and the blend of song and spoken letter content creates natural pacing breaks that hold audience attention. The SoundTrax accompaniment lets you focus on vocal production and ensemble blend rather than managing a piano or hired accompanist.

What to expect

Warm, accessible, and genuinely festive without veering into saccharine. The combination of letters to Santa and supporting songs creates a narrative arc that feels both playful and heartfelt, inviting audiences into the sincere joy of seasonal anticipation.

Who it's for

Upper elementary and middle school choirs who want a complete, performance-ready holiday program with minimal staging demands. This works well for schools looking for inclusive repertoire that engages singers of mixed ability and gives every voice part something satisfying to sing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Prepare the spoken letter sections with the same attention to clarity and pacing you'd give to sung passages; clear diction here sets up each song effectively.
  • Balance the recorded accompaniment level so it supports your choir without overpowering the singers, especially in the quieter moments.
  • Work the emotional arc of the piece; the progression from wonder to joy works best when singers understand the emotional journey, not just the notes.
  • Rehearse entrances and cutoffs with the recording multiple times before performance so singers feel secure with the accompaniment's tempo and phrasing.

How to use it

Schedule this as your main holiday concert offering, or use it as the centerpiece of a shorter winter assembly that combines this musical with one or two additional shorter pieces. The complete format means you have a full program in one package, which streamlines rehearsal planning and gives your singers a cohesive learning experience.
