Description
Sight reading and ear training are two of the most important skills for any musician. Consequently, they should be developed systematically with performance, technical and theoretical skills from the time that keyboard study begins. As new concepts are introduced in the LESSONS book, they are reinforced visually and aurally in SIGHT READING AND EAR TRAINING. These books can be used with equal success in private and group lessons. The reading exercises are based on the premise that students develop secure reading skills by first playing in specific patterns and gradually moving out of these patterns. The recognition of intervals is crucial to the development of good reading habits. In addition, students must be able to quickly identify individual notes and patterns (melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic).

Why we love this

This book builds the muscle memory for sight reading that every advancing pianist needs. Rather than presenting random exercises, it grounds reading development in recognizable patterns, then systematically expands them so students gain confidence while building interval recognition and note identification skills that transfer immediately to repertoire.

What to expect

Focused and purposeful. Each page builds on what came before, creating small wins that accumulate into genuine confidence at the keyboard. The exercises feel musical rather than mechanical, grounding abstract skills in patterns students actually recognize and enjoy repeating.

Who it's for

Level 3 pianists who are ready to strengthen their foundational reading skills through structured, sequential practice. This book serves students in both private and group lesson settings who want to build sight-reading fluency and ear training alongside their lesson repertoire and technique work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a consistent daily routine with just 5-10 minutes of these exercises before moving into lesson material. Repetition builds automaticity without fatigue.
  • Work through the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic pattern recognition sections in the order presented. Each layer strengthens the foundation for the next.
  • Play each exercise without stopping to correct mistakes on first attempt, then replay with attention to accuracy. This mirrors real performance and reinforces pattern recognition under tempo.
  • Use the recorded accompaniments if available to anchor ear training work and help students develop internal pulse while reading.

How to use it

Assign 2-3 pages weekly as homework to reinforce concepts introduced in the Lessons book. Use it in group piano classes to establish shared reading benchmarks across all students at this level. The systematic approach works especially well when integrated into a scope-and-sequence curriculum where sight reading progresses alongside repertoire and technique.

Skills your students will build

  • Interval recognition in melodic and harmonic contexts
  • Pattern recognition for melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic figures
  • Sight-reading fluency through graduated difficulty and repeated patterns
  • Ear training through aural reinforcement of written patterns
  • Internal pulse and tempo stability while reading unfamiliar material
