More about this title

About the Arranger: Brad Pfeil

Brad Pfeil

Brad Pfeil brings three decades of string teaching and performance experience to his arranging work. A principal double bass with the Las Vegas Philharmonic for multiple seasons, Pfeil has also conducted civic orchestras and directed chamber ensembles across Nevada. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and UNLV, where he also served as adjunct bass professor.

At Neuqua Valley High School in Illinois, Pfeil continues to shape young musicians as orchestra director while maintaining a private teaching studio. His background in both performance and administration informs his approach to accessible, musically rewarding arrangements.

Why we love this

Pfeil's scoring distributes the melody across the section strategically, ensuring every player contributes to the song's lyrical arc rather than sitting in accompanying figures. The Grade 2.5 difficulty keeps the technical demands realistic while preserving the contemplative character of this Hebridean folk tune, making it a rare piece that doesn't sacrifice emotional depth for accessibility.

What to expect

A sense of stillness and reflection permeates this arrangement of Benbecula's landscape. The melody unfolds with the muted, melancholic beauty of the Scottish Hebrides, inviting listeners into a quiet emotional space that feels both ancient and intimately personal.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits developing string orchestras ready to move beyond unison or simple two-part texture work. It's ideal for groups with solid ensemble discipline but varying instrumental proficiency levels, since Pfeil's scoring allows weaker voices to double stronger ones without obvious gaps.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the long-line quality of the melody by encouraging consistent vibrato across all players carrying the tune, even when it passes between sections.
  • Balance inner voices carefully so accompanying figures support rather than obscure the primary melodic thread.
  • Shape phrases with subtle dynamic swells rather than dramatic contrasts; the arrangement's strength lies in its gentle, introspective quality.
  • Allow modest flexibility in tempo during fermatas and phrase endings to let the Scottish character breathe naturally.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener to establish a contemplative mood, or pair it with more rhythmically active folk arrangements to create contrast within a thematic set. Its three-minute duration and straightforward harmonic language also make it effective as a sight-reading or sectional rehearsal piece during the first half of the season.

Skills your students will build

  • Distributing a single melody across multiple instrumental sections
  • Sustaining long lyrical lines with consistent tone and vibrato
  • Balancing melodic foreground against harmonic accompaniment
  • Responding to subtle dynamic and expressive shape within a simple harmonic framework
