About the Composer: Gayle Kowalchyk

Gayle Kowalchyk

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk has spent her career bridging the gap between piano pedagogy research and classroom practice. She earned degrees in piano performance from Ohio University and Northwestern University, then completed her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her teaching has spanned multiple institutions, including California State University Northridge, Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma, where she directed piano preparatory programs and coordinated class piano curricula.

With her husband Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Kowalchyk has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, including the widely adopted Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She serves regularly as a clinician and adjudicator at national conferences for music teachers and piano educators, and currently works as a clinician for Alfred Music in the Los Angeles area.

Why we love this

These warm-ups strip away unnecessary complexity and focus on what students actually need to master before stepping into an audition or contest room. The two-octave scope is substantial enough to develop real facility without overwhelming younger or intermediate pianists, and the inclusion of both scales and arpeggios in a single resource means your students can work through comprehensive technical preparation in one place.

What to expect

Working through these exercises feels purposeful rather than rote. The progression from five-finger patterns into two-octave scales and arpeggios creates a sense of building mastery, while the included cadences connect technical work to the harmonic language students encounter in actual repertoire.

Who it's for

Piano students preparing for auditions, contests, or advancement exams will find this resource indispensable. Teachers looking for a concise, organized technical foundation for their students across a range of levels will appreciate the clear structure and pedagogical guidance built into the material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Begin each practice session with the five-finger patterns at a slow, deliberate tempo before advancing to the full scales and arpeggios; this builds accuracy that speed alone cannot achieve.
  • Focus on evenness of tone across the entire range by listening for uniformity rather than simply playing through the material.
  • Reference the theoretical explanations provided in the book to help students understand why these patterns matter, not just how to execute them mechanically.
  • Integrate the cadence material into warm-up routines several times weekly to reinforce harmonic function alongside technical facility.

How to use it

Assign these as standing warm-up material in your studio, rotating through different keys during each week of lessons leading up to audition season. The digital format makes it easy for students to print only the keys they need to focus on, keeping their practice binders lean and targeted.

Skills your students will build

  • Two-octave major scale fluency in all keys
  • Arpeggio patterns across an expanded range
  • Five-finger pattern recall and muscle memory
  • Harmonic function recognition through cadence study
  • Key signature identification and application
  • Technical preparation for audition and contest requirements
