Description
Carl Czerny was a prolific composer who wrote approximately 1,000 published works. As a pupil of Beethoven and the teacher of Franz Liszt, he was a transmitter of ideas from one great master to another. His many collections of exercises and studies range from the easy and progressive to the virtuoso. The Czerny-Schaum edition is based on selections from Op. 599, Op. 139, Op. 821, Op. 718, Op. 636, and Op. 261. The objective is to bring together, in condensed form, excerpts that stress many varieties of technical problems. Special emphasis is placed on equal development of both hands. The technical points are equally divided between the right and the left hands. The exercises are purposely left brief, thereby avoiding stiffness and tension. Using the Czerny-Schaum exercises will improve piano technic when used in conjunction with a program of balanced repertoire.

More about this title

About the Composer: Carl Czerny

Carl Czerny (1791-1857) bridged the classical and romantic eras through his work as both composer and pedagogue. A student of Beethoven and later teacher of Franz Liszt, he occupied a unique position in music history, absorbing the techniques of one master while shaping the artistry of another. His prolific output included approximately 1,000 published works, but he is remembered chiefly for his studies and exercises that remain cornerstones of piano pedagogy.

Czerny understood that technical facility must develop systematically and without strain. His exercises prioritize clarity of purpose: each targets specific mechanical challenges while remaining musical enough to engage the student. This philosophy has ensured his studies endure in studios and classrooms across two centuries, proving that effective pedagogy and artistry are not opposites.

Why we love this

Czerny-Schaum Book One offers purposefully brief exercises that build genuine two-handed independence without the stiffness that longer, repetitive drills can produce. The Schaum selection draws from six different opus numbers, ensuring variety in technical focus and preventing the tedium that comes from drilling a single problem for pages at a time. Paired with a balanced program of repertoire, these exercises accelerate technical growth in ways that feel musical rather than mechanical.

What to expect

Clean, purposeful, and unburdened. These exercises hum with forward motion rather than labor; each one arrives with a clear technical mission and departs before fatigue sets in. The hand patterns feel natural rather than imposed, allowing students to experience technical growth as a logical unfolding rather than a battle.

Who it's for

Late elementary piano students ready to move beyond single-hand technical work and into genuine two-handed coordination. Teachers seeking condensed, varied exercises that target specific technical problems without overwhelming the student or consuming excessive practice time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Practice hands separately before combining them, especially when one hand introduces a new technical figure. This clarifies the independence Czerny demands and prevents one hand from hijacking the other's rhythm.
  • Maintain even tone and consistent tempo throughout each exercise, resisting the urge to slow down at technical transitions. The brevity of these pieces means corrections happen quickly; play through once with focus rather than stop-and-fix cycling.
  • Emphasize the left hand equally with the right, since Czerny distributes technical demands evenly between them. Listen actively for clarity in left-hand passagework rather than treating it as accompaniment.

How to use it

Integrate these exercises into the core practice routine three to five times per week, rotating through them as your student's technique develops. Use them as warm-up material before tackling more ambitious repertoire, or weave them into the middle weeks of a semester to address specific technical gaps that emerge during piece study.

Skills your students will build

  • Two-handed independence and coordination
  • Even finger work and voice clarity in both hands
  • Scalar and arpeggio patterns across multiple keys
  • Consistent tempo and rhythmic stability under technical stress
  • Legato and staccato articulation control
  • Hand position flexibility and natural hand movements
