Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has established himself as a composer and conductor whose work spans orchestral, band, and chamber music with equal facility. His compositions have reached audiences in world-class venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House, performed by ensembles ranging from professional orchestras to school groups. He received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest. His music was performed at the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, and he has been commissioned by universities including the University of Miami for significant institutional occasions.

As a conductor, Balmages regularly appears with all-state and regional bands, university ensembles, and professional groups worldwide, with notable guest conducting at the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, and the College Band Directors Conference. He is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association and currently serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.

Why we love this

Four distinct pieces that function as a complete concert program eliminate the work of programming while maintaining musical integrity and variety. The Grade 1.5 level keeps demands manageable without sacrificing the compositional sophistication that keeps musicians engaged, and the mix of composers ensures your students hear different writing styles in a single package.

What to expect

This collection moves between celebratory energy and contemplative moments, offering something for every audience member. The variety keeps rehearsals fresh and allows young musicians to experience the satisfaction of a well-shaped concert that feels like more than a collection of pieces.

Who it's for

Developing bands moving beyond elementary collections and ready for a full concert experience without overextending resources or rehearsal time. Directors looking for accessible, high-quality literature that programs coherently while introducing students to multiple compositional approaches.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the stylistic contrasts between pieces during sectional rehearsals; each composition asks for different energy and articulation, so isolate and establish the character of each before running the full program.
  • Attend to the dynamic range in slower movements like December Sky, where young musicians often underestimate the power of sustained soft playing and need specific guidance on tone production at lower volumes.
  • Use the variety of tempos and meters across the four pieces to develop flexibility in your ensemble's rhythmic awareness; the shifts between straight rhythmic patterns and syncopated material build musicianship when made explicit during rehearsal.

How to use it

Build an entire concert around this package, opening with an upbeat selection and closing with something that showcases your ensemble's range in dynamics and style. The built-in variety also makes it ideal for a themed concert or a showcase that introduces parents to the breadth of band literature at this level.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing contrasting articulation styles across multiple composers
  • Dynamic control and balance at Grade 1.5 difficulty levels
  • Rhythmic flexibility, including syncopated patterns and time signature shifts
  • Ensemble cohesion across pieces with different tempos and characters
  • Phrasing and musical shape in both fast and slow movements
