More about this title

About the Author: Willard A. Palmer

Willard A. Palmer

Willard A. Palmer stands among the most prolific music educators in American history, having authored nearly 800 published works spanning piano methods, accordion repertoire, guitar instruction, choral compositions, and solo pieces. His methodical approach to music pedagogy earned him international recognition; his compositions and instructional materials have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Palmer's scholarly work on Baroque music ornamentation became foundational to the Alfred Masterworks series and established him as a leading authority on historical performance practice.

Palmer's teaching career reflected his commitment to accessible, rigorous music instruction. He taught accordion at the University of Houston for 18 years, developing the first successful college courses in the instrument, and served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. His early formation as a pianist under Mae Vardeman and his experience as a radio performer shaped his understanding of how adults learn music. The Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and Doctor of Music degree (1983) he received honored a lifetime dedicated to bridging musicological scholarship with practical pedagogy.

Why we love this

Palmer's Level 2 course builds on proven foundations with repertoire that actually engages adult learners. The inclusion of recognizable songs keeps motivation high while the systematic progression through music concepts ensures students develop real understanding, not just finger patterns. Spanish-language instruction removes a barrier for many adult students, making this one of the most accessible Level 2 resources available.

What to expect

Playing through Level 2 feels like unlocking songs you actually recognize and want to play. The balance of structured learning and satisfying repertoire creates the momentum that keeps adult students practicing beyond the first few weeks.

Who it's for

Adult learners returning to piano or starting for the first time who benefit from instruction in Spanish. Students in this level have completed Level 1 fundamentals and are ready to expand their technical skills and musical understanding through recognizable melodies and solidified music theory.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the included CD to hear how each piece should sound before practicing, paying attention to tempo and phrasing rather than playing by imitation alone.
  • Work through the written concepts before tackling new pieces; understanding the theory behind what you're playing accelerates progress and reduces frustration.
  • Break familiar songs into manageable phrases rather than sight-reading straight through, which helps you internalize the melody and build confidence.

How to use it

This course works best as a self-directed study tool or as supplementary material alongside private instruction. For community music schools or adult education programs offering Spanish-language instruction, this Level 2 book provides continuity for students progressing through the complete Alfred's Basic Adult Course sequence.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading treble and bass clef in combined staff notation
  • Playing major and minor scales with proper technique
  • Understanding and recognizing intervals, chords, and harmonic progressions
  • Sight-reading pieces with moderate rhythmic and melodic complexity
  • Proper hand position, posture, and finger independence at the keyboard
  • Applying dynamics and articulation markings to shape musical phrases
