About the Composer: June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery earned her degree from Florida State University and has spent more than two decades teaching private piano lessons while also serving as an elementary school music educator. Her work in the classroom earned her recognition as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America and membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, the international honor society for women educators.

Beyond the studio and classroom, Montgomery has established herself as a prolific composer and author for Alfred Publishing Company. Her catalog includes the FUNdamental Musicianship Skills series, the Piano Camp series, and Theory Through the Year for Alfred's Basic Piano Library, as well as collaborative projects like the Meet the Great Composers books (co-authored with Maurice Hinson) and the Musical Concepts series (developed with Martha Mier). She has served as a clinician at state and district conventions throughout Florida, presented at the Glover International Workshop in Virginia, and contributed to Music Teachers National Association conventions. Montgomery is also active as a church pianist, children's choir director, and carillonneur at the Stephen Foster Memorial.

Why we love this

Montgomery writes elementary piano repertoire that sounds genuinely musical rather than merely instructional. The playful character of Curious Kittens pairs immediate appeal with solid technique building, making it the kind of piece students actually want to practice and parents enjoy hearing in recitals.

What to expect

Playful and gently humorous, Curious Kittens captures the restless energy and surprising antics of young cats. The music bounces along with quirky turns and unexpected moments, inviting the pianist to bring personality and imagination to each phrase.

Who it's for

Elementary-level piano students who are developing independence between hands and growing comfortable with four-page pieces. This works well for students around years 2-3 of piano study who respond to descriptive, character-driven music and are ready to explore beyond simplified arrangements.

How to get the most out of it

  • Imagine the kittens' different personalities and movements to shape your phrasing and tempo fluctuations naturally.
  • Keep the opening light and bouncy by staying relaxed in your wrists; tension will flatten the playful character.
  • Listen for where the musical ideas repeat so you can vary the touch or dynamics slightly on repeat passages.
  • Work out hand independence first by practicing each hand separately before combining them at tempo.

How to use it

Ideal for a recital program where you want to balance more serious or classical pieces with something that showcases personality and charm. This piece also works beautifully in a studio recital or festival performance that includes a theme like "Creatures Great and Small" or a program celebrating descriptive character pieces.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand independence in flowing sixteenth-note and eighth-note figures
  • Shaping musical phrases within a narrative or character context
  • Sustaining a consistent tempo across moderate length
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment textures
  • Interpreting character and mood through articulation and dynamics
