About the Composer: Michael Oare

Michael Oare

Michael Oare combines three decades of classroom experience with a prolific compositional career rooted in practical pedagogy. After earning degrees in composition and music education from Old Dominion University, he spent 33 years leading the bands at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia, where his ensembles achieved an extraordinary track record: 32 of 33 years of superior ratings, including 30 consecutive years performing grade 3 and 4 literature at the Virginia Concert Band Performance Assessment.

Oare's works for young bands appear frequently in the GIA Publications Teaching Music Through Performance series, including "To Dream in Brushstrokes" and "Equilibrium." He currently conducts the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia Concert Band and remains active in state and national music education organizations. His accolades include the 2016 Chesapeake Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year award, two National Band Association Citations of Excellence, and recognition in multiple editions of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. He is an ASCAP member and performs regularly with the Virginia Wind Symphony.

Why we love this

Oare writes from the vantage point of someone who has rehearsed thousands of middle school musicians, and it shows. Crossroads sits solidly at grade 2 without feeling thin or simplistic; the voice leading rewards clean ensemble balance, and the harmonic language stays accessible while asking real musical questions. A director seeking contest or festival material that builds musicianship alongside confidence will find exactly what works here.

What to expect

Crossroads feels purposeful and direct. The musical language is clear enough that young musicians grasp the form immediately, yet the writing carries genuine expression. There is color here, not just note-reading.

Who it's for

Growing concert bands preparing for festival or contest performance. This score works equally well for directors building a first contest portfolio or those seeking a solid concert opener that demonstrates solid fundamentals without overshadowing more ambitious pieces on the same program.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the inner voices carefully; Oare's writing in the middle registers can disappear if low brass and woodwinds overshadow the saxophones and French horns.
  • Mark pulse points in the score before rehearsal and use them as anchors when the ensemble drifts. Grade 2 bands often rush at moments of excitement.
  • Listen for clarity at sectional transitions. These moments define the piece's shape, so spend rehearsal time on clean handoffs between instrumental choirs.

How to use it

Pair this as a program opener that establishes ensemble confidence, or use it as your first contest selection while saving heavier lifting for later in the season. It also serves well as a confident closer for pops concerts or informal performances where you want to showcase musicianship in a more contemporary idiom.

Skills your students will build

  • Balanced inner voice independence and blending
  • Precise rhythmic accuracy in concert context
  • Listening and responding to ensemble balance adjustments
  • Recognizing and executing formal structure through performance
